BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 11, 1911. Serial No. 602,052.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONT GREENLEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Point Pleasant, in the county of Mason and State of Test Virginia, have invented a new and useful Burner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stovesand furnaces, and more especially to burners for gas or liquid fuel; and the object of the same is to produce a drum-shaped burner so constructed as to permit several adjustments in the jets of flame issuing therefrom.
To this end the invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure l is a central longitudinal section of this burner complete. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, part shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on the line 38 of Fig. 1, with a slight modification.
It is to be understood that this burner is adapted for use with either gas or liquid fuel which is vaporized, but in the present instance I have shown it as adapted for application to a gas pipe (not shown) whereof the tip is supposed to be directed through a mixer whose detailed construction forms no part of the present invention. The frame with the proper mixture of air is directed upward through a frusto-conical shell 5 which communicates at its smaller end 6 with the bottom of a comparatively long cylindrical drum 7 open at both ends as at 8. Over the extremities of said drum are placed caps 9 closed at their outer ends as at 10, and each cap is adjustable longitudinally and rotatably upon its respective end of the drum. Within the latter throughout a goodly portion of its length is a deflector 15 secured at a point across the diametric center of the drum as seen in Fig. 2 or somewhat higher as seen in Fig. 3, but this deflector stops short of the ends of the drum body. The top of the drum is provided with a series of fine perforations 16, and in similar manner the top of each cap is provided with a similar series of fine perforations 17. These latter are so located that when the cap is turned axially upon the drum its perforations may register exactly with those in the body, whereas the cap may be turned aside so that its perforations will not register with those in the body where the cap and body lap each other. It is obvious also that the cap can be adjusted longitudinally and telescopically and yet the perforations may be made to register or not as desired.
In the use of this device, it is connected with a suitable source of supply (not shown) and the flame is directed upward through the cone and into the interior of the body beneath the center of the deflector, whence it is directed thereby toward either extremity of the body and out from under the extremities of the deflector. Thence it rises and issues from the top of the drum through the fine perforations therein. it is desired to have a long series of jets, the caps are slipped outwardly upon the body; if the reverse, they are slipped inward. If it is desired to have a very short series of jets, the caps are both slipped inward and rotated so as to close the perforations at the extreme ends of the body, leaving open those which are near the center of the body. Either or both of the caps may be removed for purposes of cleaning and repair. The device is preferably entirely of metal, and the proportion of parts is immaterial.
What is claimed is:
A burner comprising a cylindrical body having an inlet for gaseous fuel, the said body being open at its ends and provided along its top with a series of perforations, and on each end of the body a cap rotatable and longitudinally adjustable thereon and having a series of perforations adapted to register with the perforations of the cylindrical body at the various longitudinal adjustments thereof on the said body, whereby the caps may be adjusted longitudinally to increase or decrease the number of outlets or rotated to close the perforations of the body under the caps.
