An-elongated hollow or tubular member 15 of the new and improved gas burner, providing acombustible fuel mixture conveying conduit or passageway 16 of said gasburner, is rigidly, adjustably supported upon an upright 17'rigid with a base 18 adapted to rest upon a furnace floor or other support for the gas burner.
The upper end portion of the upright 17 is snugly,
slidablydisposedin a vertical opening 19 in the hollow or tubular member 15, and a nut 20 adjustable 'alongelongatedhollow or tubular member 15 is openat its end spaced from the shorter, vertical arm 23, and snugly, slidably, receives a pipe connection 24 having, a longitudinal passageway 25 therethrough contiguous at one of its ends with the conveying conduit or passageway16 andatits otherend with a venturi 26 integrally or rigidly supported by said pipe connection. The pipe connection 24 is adjustable longitudinally in the longer, horizontally'disposed arm 22 of the elongated hollow or tubular member 15, and a clamping unit, denoted Patented Sept 9, 1958 generally at 27, is for securing said elongated hollow or tubular member 15 and said pipe connection 24 in fixed relation to each other. An annular element 28 of the clamping unit 27 has one end portion thereof fitted upon the adjacent end portion of the longer, horizontal arm 22 ofthe elongated hollow or tubular element 15 and the other end portion thereof in surrounding relation to an intermediate part of the pipe connection 24 disposed exteriorly of and in adjacent relation 'to said longer, horizontal arm 22. Aninteriorly extending flange 29 upon the annular element 28 is contiguous with the adjacent endof the longer,.horizontal arm 22. Spaced protuberances 30, 30 upon said annular element and extending interiorly thereof at-the'side 0f the annular element oppositethe interiorly extending'fiange 29 are forengagement with external surfaces of the pipe'connection 24 in transverse alinement with the annular element 28. A clamping screw 31 in said annular element, disposed perpendicularly of the longer, horizontal arm 22, is for engagement with an'external surface of said longer, horizontal arm. The free, upper end of the shorter, vertical arm 23 of theelongated hollow or tubular member 15- rigidly supports, as at 32,.a hollow fixture 33 of the gas'burner consistingofan annular element 34,- vertically disposed as disclosed,v andan outwardly flared annular flange 35, alsovertically disposed, which-is integral-with the annular element 34- The hollow fixture 33 provides a combustible fuel mixture-conveying conduit-or passageway 36 which is coaxial with the portion of the conduit or passageway 16 in the shorter, vertical arm 23. The annular-element 34 is in adjacent relation to said shorter, vertical arm, and the outwardlyfiared annular flange 35 is atthe upper end of said annular tubular-element, or end of the annular tubular element opposite the elongated hollow or tubular member 15, as Well as concentric to said annular element.

Said burner head is adjustably supported upon and in spaced relation to the outwardly flared annular flange 35 through the instrumentality of screw members 41 threadably' disposed in the burner head' and said outwardly flaredannular flange. The cone shape passageway 38 is in fact constituted as a part of the passageway 36. The'cone shape surface 40 of the burner-head 37 terminates in an apex 42 disposed-"axially of the-passageway 36, and an external cylindrical surface '43 of said burner head lies in'the circumference of thefree or outer edge 44 of the outwardlyflared annular flange 35 at the'side of said free or ou'ter edge '44 opposite the shorter, vertical arm 23 of the elongated hollow or tubular member 15.
A pair of burner head plates, indicated and 46, respectively, are suitably and conveniently supported upon the burner head 37. A post 47, integral with said burner head and extending upwardly centrally therefrom, includes an upper surface 48 in the plane of an annular surface 49 bounding the upper, exterior portion of the burner head 37. The burner head plates 45 and 46 rest upon the upper surface 48 and the annular surface 49 in such manner that inner edges 50 of said burner head plates are interengaged for the full width or diameter of the burner head plates. A vertical screw bolt includes an externally threaded body 51 in a threaded opening in the post 47 and a head 52 situated above and in spaced relation to the upper surface 48. Intermediate portions of the burner head plates at and adjacent to the inner edges 50 are disposed between the head 52 of the screw bolt and said upper surface 48, and said intermediate portions are cut away to clear the threaded body 51. One of the screw members 41 includes an upward extension 53 for entrance into a positioning aperture 54 in the burner head plate 46. An opening 55 through said burner plate 46, situated exteriorly of the burner head 37, is for access to a pilot of the gas burner when and if this becomes extinguished and needs to be relighted.
The burner head plates 45 and 46 are flat at the locations where they rest upon the upper surface 48 and the annular surface 49. Exteriorly of said annular surface 49 and the external cylindrical surface 43 of the burner head 37 said burner head plates 45 and 46 slope gently upwardly. Stated differently, the burner head plates 45 and 46 extend outwardly beyond the external cylindrical surface 43 and slant upwardly, substantially in parallel relation to the internal conical surface 39 of the outwardly flared annular flange 35, and flat lower surfaces 56 of said burner head plates which are situated exteriorly of the burner head 37 are constituted, in effect, as continuations of the conical surface 40 of said burner head. Each burner head plate 45, 46 integrally supports radially extending ribs 57 on its upper surface.
In practical use of the gas burner, the burner head plates 45, 46 will be of sufficient overall dimensions so that their exterior marginal edges terminate in slightly spaced relation to a furnace wall, about as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings. As shown, each burner head plate is semi-circular. Burner head plates of other shapes can be employed. For example, in an instance when a furnace is square in cross-section, the burner head plates could be of rectilinear configuration. Each burner head plate 45, 46 is separately removable and replaceable. The burner head plates rest upon the burner head 37 with the head 52 of the screw bolt in the post 47 contiguous with upper surfaces of inner edge portions of said burner head plates to preclude downward tilting of their exterior portions. The burner head plates are assembled in the structure by being slid inwardly under the screw head 52, and removed from the structure by being slid outwardly from beneath said screw head.
The end of the venturi 26 spaced from the pipe connection 24 fixedly supports, as at 58, a transversely disposed closure device constituted as an annular element 59 situated exteriorly of the closure device and a closure plate 60 longitudinally alined with said pipe connection 24. Said closure device is provided with adjustable air inlet means 61, in surrounding relation to the closure plate 60 and surrounded by the annular element 59, for affording access of primary air to be passed through the conduits or passageways 25, 16 and 36 to and past the cone shape conduit or passageway 38. The adjustable air inlet means 61 includes spaced, radially extending panels 62 interconnecting the annular element 59 and the closure plate 60, and a circular frame 63 rotatably supported upon the perimeter of said closure plate 60 and having radially extending panels 64 circumferentially adjustable to alter the sizes of the openings between the panels 62. A fixing screw 65 in the circular frame 63 is capable of inward adjustment to engage the perimeter of the closure plate 60 thus to fix said circular frame at any location to which circumferentially adjusted, and of outward adjustment to be released from said closure plate thus to permit rotatable adjustment of the circular frame.
A nozzle of the gas burner consists of an inlet tube 66 for gaseous fuel, rigidly secured in the closure plate 60 axially of the pipe connection 24, and a transverse disc 67 fixed in said closure plate, as by a spread member 68, against the inner end of said inlet tube 66. A central orifice through the transverse disc 67 is denoted 69.
A pipe 70 for gaseous fuel, to lead from a source (not shown) of gaseous fuel to the exterior end of the inlet tube 66, supports a gas valve 71 and a pressure regulator 72 which are ordinary equipment of gas burner of the present general character. Said gas valve 71 and pressure regulator 72 are in adjacent relation to each other, as well as in adjacent relation to the closure plate 60.
An annular ring 73 of the gas burner is in spaced, surrounding relation to the annular element 59 of the closure device and in concentric relation to the longer, horizontal arm 22. Adjustable air inlet means 74, in surrounding relation to the annular element 59 and surrounded by the annular ring 73, is for affording access of secondary air to the gas burner. The adjustable air inlet means 74 includes spaced, radially extending panels 75 for interconnecting the annular ring 73 and the annular element 59, and a circular frame 76 rotatably supported upon the perimeter of the Venturi 26 and having radially extending panels 77 circumferentially adjustable to alter the sizes of the openings between the panels 75. A fixing screw 78 in one of said panels 75 is adjustable to engage one of the panels 77 to cause the circular frame 76 to be fixed against rotative movement at any location to which rotatably adjusted, and to be released from said circular frame to permit its rotatable adjustment.
A hood 79 of the gas burner is constituted as a hollow cylindrical member having its inner end supported by and upon an outer end portion of an external cylindrical surface 80 of the annular ring 73 and its outer end closed by a dome shape portion 81. Air inlets in the hood 79 are denoted 82, and an elongated slot 83 in said hood and open to the cylindrical end thereof is for clearance of the fuel pipe 70. A small screw bolt 84 in the dome shape portion 81 and a part rigid with the fuel pipe 70 is for retaining the hood 79 in covering relation to the elements housed thereby.
As disclosed in Fig. l, the burner proper of the gas burner when in use is situated within a furnace. A wall 85 of the furnace is of refractory material. The annular ring 73 of the gas burner is rigidly fixed in an opening 86 in the wall 85. The forward portion of the elongated hollow or tubular member 15 will be supported upon the upright 17 and the base 18 in such manner that the annular ring 73 will be coaxial with the bounding surface of the opening 86.
The annular ring 73 rigidly supports an anchoring bracket 87 for the fuel pipe 70, as well as for the gas valve 71 and pressure regulator 72 mounted upon said fuel pipe. A longer, horizontal arm 88 of said anchoring bracket is rigidly secured, as at 89, against a lower interior surface of the annular ring 73, and a shorter, vertical arm 90 of the anchoring bracket is disposed exteriorly of said annular ring, adjacent the end thereof opposite the elongated hollow or tubular member 15. An anchor for said fuel pipe 70 is constituted as an elongated bar 91, having an opening 92 in an upper portion thereof for receiving the fuel pipe 70 and an aperture 93 in an intermediate portion thereof for receiving a clamping bolt 94, and a protuberance 95 upon a lower end portion of the elongated bar for entering a concavity 96 in the adjacent end of the longer, horizontal arm 88 of the anchoring bracket 87. bolt-94 is situated in a threaded opening 97 in-an upper The' bo'dy of theclamping portion ofthe-shortenvertical arm 90 f the anchoring :bracket'87. -An upper-end portion of the elongated bar 91.ofthe-:anchor for thefuelpipe 70 is engaged against 'a surface. ofa nut 98 upon said fuel-pipe at'the side of said not opposite the burnerproper in'response to inward turning of the-clamping bolt 94. When said clamping Ibolt vis fastened down, as in Fig. -4 ofthe drawings, the ifuel pipe 70 and appurtenant parts, includingthegas .valvei71and thepressureregulator'72, will be rigidly said fuel pipe supports rigid with the annular ring 73,
itself rigid with the furnace wall; said anchoring bracket, anchor and clamping bolt also comprise means for obtaining accurate longitudinal alinement of parts of the gas burner situated exteriorly and interiorly of said annular ring.
A pilot of the gas burner is denoted at 99, a flexible pipe connection to said pilot is indicated at 100, and an outlet from the pilot is represented at 101. A bracket for adjustably supporting said pilot 99 is denoted generally at 102. The outlet 101 from the pilot is directly beneath the opening 55 in the burner head plate 46.
The hood 79 is removable to the end that the gas valve 71 and the pressure regulator 72 can be made accessible when these may require attention. The anchoring bracket 87, the anchor and the clamping bolt 94 secure the fuel pipe 70 in fixed, concentric relation to the annular ring 73 itselfrigid with the furnace wall. Said fuel pipe, with appurtenances, can be readily and easily removed from the remainder of the assembly when the hood 79 is withdrawn and the clamping bolt 94 is disassembled.
Primary air for the gas burner will travel past the closure plate 60 by way of the adjustable inlet means 61 into the Venturi 26, the pipe connection 24 and the elongated hollow or tubular member 15. By adjustment of the air inlet means 61, larger or smaller quantities of primary air can be permitted to pass to the burner proper. Gaseous fuel will flow under pressure through the orifice 69 in the transverse disc 67 into the elongated hollow or tubular member, The gaseous fuel and primary air will become mixed in the Venturi 26. The resultant combustible fuel mixture will travel through the conduits or passageways 25, 16, 36 and 38 to the annular outlet from the conduit or passageway 38, beneath the burner head plates 45 and 46, where said combustible fuel mixture is to be burned.
Secondary air for the gas burner will travel through the air inlets 82 into the hood 79 and past the circular frame 76 by way of the adjustable inlet means 74 into the furnace, past the wall of said furnace, where said secondary air will be available for use at and exteriorly of the burner proper. The construction and arrangement will be such that there will be no passage of secondary air past the furnace wall into the furnace other than secondary air permitted to enter the furnace by Way of the adjustable air inlet means 74. By adjustment of said last mentioned inlet means, larger or smaller quantities of secondary air can be permitted to pass into the furnace.
In practical operation of the burner, the flame is spread in a thin sheet out to the wall of the furnace in such manner as to cause said furnace wall to be blanketed. Thus valuable furnace heating surface is utilized. By reason of thefact that the burner head 37 and the hollow fixture 33 are relatively adjustable, the annular outlet from the conduit or passageway 38 selectively can be made wider or narrower.

What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a burner, a furnace including a wall having an opening, a pipe for gaseous fuel leading to said burner by way of said opening, an annular ring fixed in said opening in said wall in surrounding relation to said pipe, an anchoring bracket for said pipe for gaseous fuel rigid with and extending outwardly beyond said annular ring and having a vertical projection, an anchor for said pipe for gaseous fuel constituted as an elongated bar having an opening in an end portion thereof for receiving said pipe'for gaseous fuel and an aperture in an intermediate portion thereof, a clamping bolt in said aperture for detachablysecuring said anchor to said vertical projection and said elongated bar engaged against a surface rigid with said pipe for gasous fuel and opposite said annular ring, said clamping bolt being situated in a threaded opening in the vertical projection of said anchoring bracket, and a protuberance upon a portion of said elongated bar spaced from the pipe for gaseous fuel and at the side of said pipe opposite said clamping bolt situated in a concavity of said anchoring bracket.
2. In combination, a burner, a furnace including a wall having an opening, a pipe for gaseous fuel leading to said burner by way of said opening, devices contiguous with said pipe for gaseous fuel situated outside of said furnace, an annular ring fixed in said opening in said wall in surrounding relation to said pipe, an anchoring bracket for said pipe for gaseous fuel rigid with and extending outwardly beyond said annular ring and having a vertical projection, an anchor for said pipe for gaseous fuel constituted as an elongated bar having an opening in an end portion thereof for receiving said pipe for gaseous fueland an aperture in an intermediate portion thereof, a clamping bolt in said aperture for detachably securing said anchor to said vertical projection and said elongated bar engaged against a surface rigid with said pipe for gaseous fuel and opposite said annular ring, said clamping bolt being situated in the threaded opening in a vertical projection of said anchoring bracket, and a protuberance upon a portion of said elongated bar spaced from the pipe for gaseous fuel and at the side of said pipe opposite said clamping bolt situated in a concavity in said anchoring bracket.
3. In a gas burner for use within a furnace, an elongated tubular member providing a combustible fuel mixture conveying conduit, a pipe connection supported upon a wall of said furnace and having a longitudinal passageway therethrough contiguous at its inner end with an outer, horizontal portion of said elongated tubular member, said outer, horizontal portion of the elongated tubular member and said pipe connection being telescopically assembled for relative longitudinal adjustment, means for fixedly securing said elongated tubular member andpipe connection in fixed relation to each other including an annular element having an end portion thereof fitted upon an adjacent end portion of said elongated tubular member and an opposite end portion thereof in surrounding relation to an intermediate part of said pipe connection, an interiorly extending flange upon said annular element in engaged relation to the adjacent end of said elongated tubular member, spaced protuberances upon and extending interiorly of the annular element for engagement with the external surface of said pipe connection and a clamping screw in the end portion 7 of said annular element fitted upon said tubular member to be engaged against an external surace thereof, and means supporting an inner end portion of the elongated tubular member upon a floor of said furnace for vertical adjustment.
