A Mixers, of which the fol owing is a s ecication, such as will enable those skil ed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to as mixers and particularly to devices of this class for use in connection with fuel gas burners, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified with a high pressure adjustable fuel discharge nozzle whereby the relative position thereof to the throat 0f the mixing device will control the entrainment of air thei'einto thus obtaining the desired and most eiiicient combustible'mixture; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in a device of the class specilied which is simple in construction and operation, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention described and claimed herein is an improvement o n that described and claimed in a rior patent granted to me October 19, 1920,1l`lo. 1,355,998, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by Suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. l is a plan view of my improved mixing device;
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1' and ,Fig ,3 a view similar to Fig. 2 with part of the construction shown in said figure in full lines and sho'wing a modification.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I have indicated at 5 the main body portion of my improved device and at 6 a supplemental tubular body portion. The main body portion 5 is provided at one end with a ring member 7 formed integral with said body portion through arms 8, which form a large aperture 9 in the main body portion through which air is adapted to pass into the supplemental body portion. v
The supplemental body portion 1s provided with an enlarged head 10 `adapted to receive the ring member 7 and to which said head is secured by screws or bolts 11, as
.with a reduced thro clearly shown in Fig. 2. The head end ofthe supplemental body portion is provided t 12 which dares outwardl into the aper ure 9, as shown at 13, and t esupplemental body portion is provided outwardly of the -throat 12 with a tapered or flaring mixing chamber 14. The
free end portion of said supplemental body portion is preferably threaded as indicated at 15 to permit of its connection with a furnace or similar apparatus.
The main body portion 5 is provided with a fuel chamber 16 and fuel is adapted-to be admitted into said chamber through an aperture 17. A tube 18 is adjustably mounted in' the main bod portion 5 and communicates with the`: amber 16 and extends outwardly through one end of said body portion into the aperture 9,f'and the outer end of said tube iii provided with a detachable nozzle 19. 'Hic tube 18 and nozzle 19 form an adjustable fuel dischar device which is .movable toward and om the throat 12 of the 'supplemental body ortion to control the entrainment of air into the mixingv chamber 14 of said body ortion in the assage of fuel thereinto t rough the nozz e 19.
The ad'ustment of the tube 18 may be accomplis ed in many ways, but in the construction shown a hexa on-,end 20 is provided on said tube and 1n order to vprevent the leaking of fuel or fuel gas from* the fuel chamber 16 outwardly around the tube 18, a suitable packing ring 21 is em loyed, which is held in place by an adjusta le sleeve 22.
It will be seen from the foregoing descri tion that the fuel gas employed which is l usuall under a predetermined pressure is passe into the chamber 16 of the main body portion and thus and nozzle 19 into the mixing chamber 14 of the supplemental body portion, and the position o lthe nozzle 19 relatively to the throat 12 will control the entrainment of air through the throat and into the` mixi chamber 14 thus regulating the mixture o fuel and air passed into said mixing chamber and thus into a furnace or similar apparatus. With the construction shown it will be apparent that the ad'ustment of the, tube 18 and nozzle 19 may formed, whenever desired or necessary, and it will also be seen that the air drawn into the mixing chamber 14 will'. not be obstructed, or the flow thereof retarded in any out through the tube 18 f readily per- E way Athus producingl a very effective and efficient gas mixing device of thel class and for the purpose specified.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing I have shown a slight modification in which the supplemental body portion 6 is provided at its inner or hea portion with a tubular member 23 which' is adjustably mounted vin said body portion, said tubular member being provided with the reduced throat 1;'2 which flares outwardly, as shown at 18, and the mixing chamber 14 will be formed partially in the tubular member 23 and the supplemental body portionv 6. The adjustment of said tubular member may be' accomplished through the aperture scribed comprising a 9 by a spanner wrench or the like engaging apertures 24 in the periphery of the protruding portion of sald tubular member.
With the construction shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing by reason of the adjustable as well as the detachable tubular member 23, the relative size of the throat 12 may be varied by the use of tubular members of different sizes, and the position of said throat in the supplemental body portion may also be varied. It will also be noted that with the construction shown in Fig. 3A the admission of air through the aperture 9 into the mixin chamber ma be materially shut ofi' or cho ed b adjusting the tubular member 23 outward y into the aperture 9 with the slueve 18 and nozzle 19 in their innermost position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
It will be apparent that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, I am not necessarily imited to these details, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made,within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas mixing device of the class demain body portion provided with a fuel chamber, means for admitting fuel into said chamber, a ring member at one end of the body portion joined therewith by arms, and a supplementalI body portion detachabl mounted in connection with said ring mem er and provided with a mixing chamber having a reduced and outwardly flaring throat, and a fuel discharge tube adjustably mounted in the main body portion and provided with a discharge nozzie movable toward and from said throat to control the entrainment of air into the mixin chamber through said throat.
2. 1 device of the class described' comprising a main body portion provided with a fuel chamber, a supplemental tubular body ortion detachably connected with the main ody portion and provided with a flared throat, inwardly of which is a mixing chamber, means whereby fuel may be admitted into the fuel chamber, and a fuel discharge device adjustably mounted in the main body portion and communicatin with the fuel chamber thereof and mova le toward and from said throat.
3. A device of the class described comprising a main body portion rovided with a fuel chamber, a supplemental) tubular body ortion detachably connected with the main ody portion and provided with a flared throat, inwardly of which is a mixing chamber, means whereby fuel may be admitted into the fuel chamber. a fuel dischar eldevice adjustably mounted in the main ody portion and communicatin with the fuel chamber thereof and movabgle toward and from said throat, and means whereby air may pass through the main body portion and into the supplemeital body portion through said throat and around said fuel supply device.
4. A device oz' the class described comprising main and supplemental body portions, said mai'c. body portion being cut out to forni an air space, said supplemental body portionbeing tucular in form and provided with a mixing chamber opening outwardly through one end thereof, a tube adjustably and etachably mounted in the other end thereof and provided with. an outwardly Haring throat which communicates with said air space, the main body portion being provided with a fuel chamber and a fuel discharge device adjustably mounted in said main body portion and movable toward and from the throat of said tube to control the entrainment of air into said mixing chamber.
5. A gas mixing device of the class described comprising a suitable body portion composed of separate parts having an air space therebetween, a tubular member adjustably provided with an outwardly flaring throat inwardly of which is a mixing chamber, and
'a fuel discharge device adjustably mounted in they other of said parts and movable toward and from the throat of said tubular member.
