Description

` (No Model.) J. M. DEXTER.
` GOAL OIL LAMP. No. 258223, Patented May 23, 1882.
UNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. DEXTER, OF ELMIBA, NEW YORK.
coAL-oL LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258323, dated May 23, 1882.
' Application filed December 2-2. sa. (No model.) A
To all whom it may concm:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. DEXTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elmira, Chenung eounty, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Goal-Oil Lanps, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to secure the center socket tube ot' a coal-oillamp firmly in place, and at the same time prevent the escape of oil to the sides o't the lanp, and this l eft'ect by the Construction hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawin'gs, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation in section ot' snfficient of a coal-oil lanp to show my improvement; Figs. 2 and 3, sections showing modifications. Fig. 4 is a plan of the reservoir-top, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan of the socket-tube, Fig. 3.
The top of the lanp-reservoir A may be recessed, as in the lannp described in Letters Patent granted to me January 25,1881, No. 236,937, and the center socket-tube, B, maybe provided with lips d to bear against the under side of the top b of the reservoir, the tube beingdrawn upward by tnrning a flanged or collar plate, 1), as described in the Letters Patent granted to me J annary 25, 1881, No. 236,996.
To prevent any fiow ot' oil `froni the burer to the sides of the reservor over the collarplate,I form in the -latter, between its edge and the tube B, a recess, e, preferably annular, of such depth as to collect and retain any oil that may flow into the plate.
In some cases, especially where the neok c of the collar-plate is high, it is best to forn an inward downwardly-inelined flange, w,with a threaded socket to receive the tube B, so as to permit the burner to be set well down toward the reservoir. In such case a part of the oil may drip down onto the top b of the reservoir, and as the latter is inclined the oil will flow inward toward the tube B and down between the latter and the edge of the central opening in the top.
As there is sometimes ,a tendeney of the oil to spread in a thin film over the top and toward the edge of the reservoir, especially when covered by the plate D, that prevents evaporation, I interpose between the plate and the top of the reservoir a packing, h, of bibulous paper or other material that efiectually prevents any flow beyond it.
To avoid the use of two thick paching when the plate sets well up from the reservoir, Iform on the latter an annlar rib, e', upon which the packing may be compressed, and to secure a better hold upon the seat and a better joint I corrugate the top surface ot' the same, as shown.
ln the modifications Figs. 3, 4, and 5 the top of the reservoir has a notch, s, to receive a lip, d, formed by pressing out the side of the tube B,whieh lip is passed through the notch, and the tube is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 3, being thus held vertically. A detachable V-shaped key, F, fits between shouldcrs t t of the tube and into the notch s, and prevents the tube from turnin g. The pack ing h is interposed between the sunken por.- tion e of the colIar-plate and the top of the reservoir. i
' I claimi 1. The combination, with a lamp-reservoir,
A, of a central tube, B, and meansforconnecting it detachably to the 'eservoir, and colla'- plate D, serewing upon said tube, extending toward the sides of the reservoir and provided with a recess, e, snbstantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the reservoir having a eentrally-depressed top, tube B, and a plate, D, havinga recess, e, and downwardlyinclined screw-flange w, as set forth.
3. The combination of the reservoir, collarplate, and packing h, as set t'orth.
4. The reservoir provided with an annular raised serrated seat for the packing, substan tially as described.
5. The combination of the notched reservoir, tube B, having a lip, d, and shoulders t t, and detachable key F, substantially as set forth.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub-
