LAMP-FILLER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. N. Dow and ALBERT IV. Conn, citizens of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in LampFillers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp fillers and has particular reference to a device of that kind adapted to be applied to a lamp burning coal-oil or its equivalent, and when so applied may be manipulated to permit the reservoir of the lamp to be filled with the lighting fluid without the usual necessity of removing the burner from the reservoir.
Another object is the provision of an attachment which may be applied to most forms of lamps and burners now in use without the necessity of changing the structure of the lamps and burners.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the'advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing its application to a burner and lamp. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the reservoir section. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the closure section. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective of the top plate and one side wall of the closure section.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The burner is designated by the numeral 5 and the lamp reservoir by the numeral 6.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a reservoir section designated by the numeral 7 and a closure section designated by the numeral 8. The reservoir section includes in its construction an oblong bottom plate 9 from the Specification of Letters Patent.

opposite ends of which rise the end walls 10 and to the opposite sides of which are secured the side walls 11. The lower portions of the side walls depend below the plane of the bottom 9 and constitute flanges, a function of which will appear later. The bottom is centrally provided with an opening 12 and surrounding this opening and located on the outer face of the bottom is an eXteriorly screw threaded nipple 13 of a size to nicely fit within the collar on the lamp reservoir 6. The closure section is preferably formed of a single piece of channeled metal, the top plate 14; of which is centrally provided with an opening 133, the said opening 15 being surrounded by a screw threaded nipple 16 to receive the burner 5. The top plate let is slightly greater in width than the bottom 9 of the reservoir and from its opposite longitudinal sides depend the side walls 17 and 18. The side walls 17 and 18 are somewhat greater in width than the side walls 11 of the reservoir section and adjacent to their lower edges are bent upwardly and inwardly as shown at 19, whereby ways are provided which receive the downwardly extending portions of the side walls 11 of the reservoir section. The side walls 17 and 18 are of such width that after the ways are formed the distance between the said ways and top plate will correspond approximately to the width of the side walls 11 of the reservoir section so that when the side walls are passed through the ways the top plate will bear upon the upper open end of the reservoir and form a complete closure for the same. The ways are at one end bent inwardly, whereby stops are provided to limit the movement of the closure in one direction. Extending laterally from the opposite side walls of the closure section are lugs 20, which provide finger holds for the operator when sliding the closure on the reservoir section.
It will be observed that by the provision of the flanges the device when positioned on a lamp will present a neat appearance by virtue of the flanges extending on opposite sides of the collar of the lamp reservoir, while at the same time accidental displacement of the parts will be prevented.
In the use of the device the reservoir section is threaded into the collar of the lamp reservoir, it being understood that the burner 5 is first threaded into the closure section so that the wick will extend through the alining openings of both sections. When the parts are so positioned and it is necessary to fill the lamp the same may be done by simply sliding the closure section in the direction of its length whereupon an opening will be presented in the reservoir section, into which the liquid may be directed and from whence it will flow into the reservoir of the lamp. It will be further observed that by the provision of the reser voir that the danger of the fluid escaping and flowing down the sides of the lamp either while the lamp is burning or is being filled will be positively prevented.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a device which. is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts -and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, as new is 1. A lamp filler including a stationary reservoir section, the bot-tom of which is provided with a central opening surrounded by a nipple to be secured to the lamp, and the sides of said reservoir section extending below the plane of the bottom thereof, a channeled closure section having a central opening to receive the burner and the lower portions of its side walls being upturned to receive the depending sides of the reservoir section.
2. A lamp filler including an oblong stationary reservoir section, the bottom of which is provided with a central opening surrounded by a nipple to be secured to the lamp, and the sides of which extend below the plane of the bottom, a channeled closure section having a central opening to receive the burner and the lower portions of its side walls being upturned, said upturned portions constituting ways to receive the depending sides of the reservoir section, and lateral lugs on the outer faces of the opposite sides of the channeled closure section.
