UNITED STATES;
PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC N. ROBERTS, OF NORRISTO'WN, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAM P-TOP HOLDER.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,543, dated January 5, 1892.
A h ti fil d February 9, 1891. Serial No. 380,844. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo N. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norristown, county of Montgomery, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Top Holders, of which the following is a'specification', reference being had to the accompanying drawings to more fully illustrate the device.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device which can be used to keep a lamp-top or awick in place when a lamp is being filled with oil or other kindred material.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a lamp, partly sectional, inwhich my device is shown. Fig. 2 shows a side view of the device holding a lamp top and wick in position to fill the lamp. I
A is a U-shaped wire lamp-top holder, and is preferably made with its top end soldered through holes or otherwise suitably fastened to the lamp-top B.
O is a lamp-wick and in the usual way is passed through the lamp-top to inside of lamp.
D is the lamp-fount.
A is a shoulder or bend in wire lamp-top holder, and is preferably used to give better position to the lamp-top, as may be seen in Fig. 2. The shoulder then bearing upon outer edge of lamp-opening tends to hold the parts more securely in position.
The operation of the device is as follows:
' When it is desired to fill the lamp with fluid and the top being unscrewed or otherwise removed, it may be held in position as shown in Fig. 2, the lower endof the wire adjuster extending beyond the vertical opening of the lamp orfount, and, bearingupon the loweredge of such opening, is there held in place by weight of lamp-top 13. The wick O, extending from top 13 to within the fount, is held in place to the side of the opening by bearing of holder A upon it, as will be seen. of spout of oil-can may then be inserted between the prongs of holder A and the lamp filled without the necessity of other holding or placing of top than as described.
One great advantage of my device is that a person is free to apply'both hands to the oilcan when holding the same for filling.
The preferable device as used by me is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and passes through holes made in the lamp '-top and has open lower ends to surround said lamp-wick.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the lamp-fount D, having a removable top B and wick O, of a U -shaped wire'holder fastened to the top and constructedto have its open end extend within said lamp-fount and beyond the lower edge of the lamp-opening and be held in position by the weightof the lamp-top, which it supports, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The. combination, with the lamp-fount D, having a removable top B, of a lamp-top holder formed of a U-shaped wire fastened to said top and extending within said lamp-fount beyond the lower edge of the lamp-opening and having a shoulder A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
