To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT FREYGANG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Filling Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved device for filling petroleum and other lampsin a convenient manner without spilling the oil and without drip from the wick; and the invention consists in a funnel that is inserted into the mouth of the bowl and provided at the lower end of the discharge-tube with a verticallyguided float-valve that closes the funnel when the bowl is filled up to the neck. A spring-clamp at one side of the funnel is guided by a guard-wire, and serves to hold the funnel in position on the neck of the bowl. A pointed projection at the upper end of the funnel serves for supporting the burner and the Wick during the filling of the bowl.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved device for filling lamps, shown in position in the neck of the lamp bowl. Fig. 2 is an end elevation and Fig. 3 a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a funnel that is inserted into the neck of the lamp-bowl to be filled. The funnel A is supported on the neck of the bowl by a spring clamp, B, the spring-shank b of which is attached at its upper end to the funnel A, while its lower part is guided by a fixed horizontal wire guard, b, that is located near the junction of the conical portion of the funnel with the discharge-tube A of the same. The spring-clamp B presses on the outside of the neck of the bowl, so as to hold thereby the funnel A in a position closer to one side of the neck than to the other, so as to provide awider space between the tubular portion of the funnel and that part of the neck opposite to the point to which the spring-clamp is applied, for the purpose of giving sufiicient space for the wick that passes sidewise of the funnel into the bowl. The spring-shank b of the clamp B is bent and forms a handle, by means of which provided with slotted openings a, through which the oil passes into the bowl, and with a float-valve, O, the stem cl of which is guided in a central hole of a diametrical supporting-arm, d, at the upper part of the funnel A. The upper end of the stem is provided with an eye or other stop, d by which the float-valve is retained in its lowermost position. A valveseat, 0, is formed in the discharge'tube A above the openings (1, against which seat the floatvalve is pressed, so as to close the dischargetube when the oil in the bowl arrives at the required level. The small quantityof oil in the funnel is discharged by the dropping of the valve into the bowl when the funnel is removed from the bowl.
To the upper end of the funnel A is attached a pointed upwardlyprojecting lug or stud, f, preferably at a point diametrically opposite to the handle I) of the spring-clamp B. The lower end of the wick-tube of the burner is placed in position on the lug or pin f, while the wick passes from the burner along the funnel into the neck of the bowl. The drip of oil from the wick is thereby conducted along the funnel back into the bowl.
My improved filling device is of special advantage when a large number of lamps have to be filled-as in shops, factories, railroadstations, 8m; but it is also adapted for domestie use, owing to the facility and convenience by which lamps may be filled without spilling or dripping of the oil and soiling of the hands.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a funnel, a spring clamp attached to one side of thefunnel, and a guard-device for guiding said clamp, sub stantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a funnel the discharge-tube of which is provided with escapeopenings and a seat above said escape'openings, a verticallyguided float-valve, a springclamp attached to the upper part of the funnel, and a guard device for guiding the shank of the spring-clamp, substantially as set forth.
3. Afunnel-shaped filling device for lamps, provided at its upper part with a pin or lug for supporting the burner, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of afunnel having a pin or lug at its upper edge, a spring-clamp at tached to one side of the funnel, and a guard device for guiding said clamp, substantially as set forth.
a 5. The combination of a funnel havingapin or lug at its upper edge, and a spring-clamp attached to the funnel at a point diametrically opposite to the pin or lug, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a funnel having a pin or lug at its upper edge, a spring-clamp at a point diametrically opposite to the same, a guard device for guiding said clamp, and a vertically-guided float-valve for closing the lower end of the funnel, substantially as set forth. 15 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
