Description

Patented Jan. 30, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT or ies This invention relates to nursery soap dispensers and more particularly to a portable liquid soap dispenser for use in hospital nuseries.
The dispenser is so arranged that it is operated by the hand receiving the liquid soap, thereby leaving the nurses other hand free to hold the infant.
An important feature is that only the back of the hand contacts with the dispenser during the dispensing of the liquid soap.
By my construction the desired amount, of liquid soap can be withdrawn at one time and no pumping action is required; in fact a single depression of the operating knob causes a steady stream of liquid soap to flow from the dispenser, and a flow will continue until the knob has been released when it will cease. The dispensing tube or spout is so arranged that there will be no dripping after the dispensing valve is closed.
Another feature is the telescopic dispensing tube, as it can be adjusted so that the soap will be delivered into the center of the palm of the hand and it can be pushed back so that it will barely project beyond the soap container, rendering it less liable to catch on something and upset the dispenser.
The operating knob is also made adjustable so that it can be positioned for contact with the back of the hand at or near its center and thus avoid the possibility of the hand slipping from the knob or the tipping of the hand with the resultant spilling of the soap therein.
In accomplishing these and other objects of my invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my invention and illustrating the manner of operating the same.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section of my invention.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental vertical section showing the arrangement of the telescopic dispensing tube.
Referring to the drawing in detail:
1 represents a hollow base having a central upwardly extending boss 2 which is provided with a bore 3. Secured in the bore 3 is a hollow standard or tubular member 4, the upper end of which is secured in the boss 5 formed on the lower face of the bottom 6.
The upper face is provided with an upwardly extending peripheral flange 7 and a depression 8, the portion of the upper face between the edge of the recess and the inner vertical face of the flange 7 forming a shoulder or gasket seat 9.
Projecting upwardly from the bottom 6 is a centrally located hollow boss 10 in the upper end of which is secured a tie rod 11. The boss 10 has a valve seat 12 formed in its bottom and extending downwardly therefrom is a discharge passageway or opening 13 which communicates with a passageway or conduit 14 intersecting the opening 13 to divide the opening into upper and lower portions and which extends radially of the bottom and inclines upwardly and outwardly. Passageways 15 are formed through the wall of the boss 10 and constitute, with the passageway 13 and the valve seat 12, an outlet port for the contents of the soap container.
Resting on the shoulder 9 is a gasket 16 with which one end of a sleeve 1'7 contacts. The sleeve is preferably made of transparent or translucent material, such as glass or the like, and forms an intermediate transparent portion so that the amount of liquid in the dispenser can be readily ascertained.
Supported on the upper end of the sleeve 1'7 is a gasket 18, and on this gasket the top 19 is placed. The top 19 has a depending flange 20 which, as well as the flange 7, is adapted to surround the sleeve 17 adjacent its ends.
The top 19 is provided with a central opening 21 through which the screw-threaded upper end 22 of the tie rod 11 extends. This end receives a nut 23 which, when screwed down, draws the top toward the bottom and thereby clamps'the sleeve in position, the gaskets 16 and 18 aiding to make the container thus formed leak-proof.
The top 19 is also provided with a filler opening 24 in which a plug 25 is adapted to be secured. The plug 25 has a vent 26 therein so that liquid in the container can flow out freely.
Extending through the bottom 6 is a rod or valve stem 27, having a valve 28 on its upper end. 7 The lower end of the rod 27 is bifurcated for receiving therebetween one end of a rod 29 pivotally mounted intermediate its ends in a bracket 30, secured within the base 1.
A sleeve 31 is slidably mounted on the free end of the lever 29 and is held in position by a screw or plunger 32 which extends through a slot 33 formed in the base 1 so that said sleeve can be adjusted longitudinally of the lever 29. The upper end of the screw has a knob 44 on its upper T end which is designed for contact with the back of the hand. A spring 34 surrounds the rod 2'7 and is interposed between the bottom 6 and a collar 35 mounted on the rod, which normally holds the valve 28 on the seat 12.
slidably or telescopically mounted in the passage is a dispensing tube 36, its outer end being downturned as at 3'7. Secured in the inner end of the dispensing tube is a metering jet 38 having a head 39 which is designed to contact a sleeve 40 inserted in the outer end of the passageway 14.
A packing nut 41 is screwed into the outer end of the passage 14 which compresses packing 42 interposed between the nut and sleeve 40, thus making a leak-tight sliding joint so as to permit the dispensing tube to be moved forwardly and backwardly longitudinally for positioning the downturned end 3'7 of the dispensing tube 36 over the center of the palm of the hand. This feature, together with the adjustability of the knob 4 1, permits setting of the device for various sizes of hands and at the same time the dispensing tube can be pushed in so that it will protrude only a short distance, a desirable feature when moving the dispenser from place to place.
If desired, the bottom of the base 1 may be closed with a plate 43.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
, 1. A nursery soap dispenser comprising a hollow base, a soap container supported above said base, a discharge passageway extending radially in the bottom of said container, a port in the bottom of said container for admitting soap to said discharge passageway, a valve for controlling the passage of soap through said port, a lever pivotally mounted in said base and connected at one end to said valve for operating the same, a sleeve slidably mounted on the opposite end of said lever, and means carried by said sleeve and extending upwardly through said base for operating said lever, said means also securing said sleeve on said lever.
2. In a device of the character described, a container including a bottom having a radial discharge conduit and a port communicating the container with the conduit, a tube slidably mounted insealing relation with said conduit and terminating in a downturned end, a support for the container, a valve in the port for controlling flow of fluid from the container into said conduit and tube, means for actuating the valve includinga lever pivotally carried by the support and a vertical plunger on the lever in substantially vertical alignment with said tube whereby depression of the plunger with the back of a hand will discharge fluid from the tube into the palm of the hand, and means for adjustably mounting the plunger on the lever whereby the plunger and down-turned end is adjustable in relation one to the other.

In a device of the character described, a container including a bottom member having a radial discharge conduit and an axial opening intersected by said conduit to divide the opening into upper and lower portions, a valve seat in the upper portion of said opening and above said 108 conduit, a valve normally engaging said seat and having a stem rigidly connected therewith and extending through and closing the lower portion of said opening, a base for the container including a hollow standard secured concentrically to the bottom member housing for said valve stem, and a lever pivotally mounted in the base and connected with thevalve stem for operating the valve to effect flow of liquid through said valve seat directly to the conduit.
5. .In a device of the character described, a container including a bottom having a radial discharge'conduit and anoaxial opening intersected by the conduit to divide the opening into upper and lower portions, a valve seat in the upper 11-5 portion of said opening, an upstanding boss on said bottom surrounding the valve seat and having a lateral port, a top for the'container, a sleeve interposed between said top and bottom, means for clampingthe sleeve between the top and bottom including a rod secured to said boss, a valve normally engaging said seat and having a stem extending through and closing the lower portion of the opening to effect flow of liquid from the container through the radial port and into the conduit when the valve is open, and means for operating. the valve.
