Description

(NOMOIBI') H. C. ATKINSON 8 W. MILLER.
OMBINED UIL GAN AND LAMP FILLER No. 548,284. Patented 008.' z2, 1895.
UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. ATKINSON AND WILLIAM MILLER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED OIL-CAN AND LAMP-FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,284, dated October 22, 1895.
Application iled February 11, 1895. Serial No. 537,945. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, HENRY C. ATKINSON and WILLIAM MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Oil-Can and Lamp-Filler; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of our invention is to provide a can for oil which can be conveniently carried and from which lamps can be conveniently filled. We accomplish that by means of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
l In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of our oil-can and lamp-ller arranged for carrying oil. Fig. 2 is a similar view of our can arranged so that lamps or other ves sels can be conveniently filled from it, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a position of the can while oil is being drawn from it.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several drawings.
A represents the can.
B represents a bail or carrying-handle so constructed and arranged that it can be convered into a support on which the can is pivote The bail is preferably rectangular in shape, and consists of two similar folding parts b b, their ends attached to the can on opposite sides at the medial line of its circumference at points about two-thirds of the length of the can from its bottom by means of a bolt b passing through the sides of the can and through their ends, on which bolt they work as on a pivot. The inner folding part b is made slightly smaller than the outer one, so that when brought together to form a bail or handle for carrying the can the outer one fits snugly over the inner one, as shown in Fig. 1. The top of the can is provided with aspringclasp D, adapted to fit around the two parts when brought together to form the bail and hold them together, as shown in Fig. l.
When the can has been filled and it is desired to arrange it so that lamps can be conveniently lilled from it, the clasp D is thrown back into the position shown in Figs. 2 and, the two parts of the bail are separated and turned outwardly and downward till their top s come under the bottom of the can, as shown in Fig. 2, raising the can and holding itsuspended by the bolt b', on which it can be swung as a pivot.
In order to prevent the two parts of the bail from spreading, there is attached on one side of the can, to the side of the outer folding part of the bail by a pivot or rivet bia latch or ratchet-bar b2, and on the opposite or outer edge of the sideof the inner folding part b is constructed a series of ratchet-teeth. The ratchet-bar h2 is formed with either aprojecting lug or an offset adapted to fit into these ratchet-teeth and with a handle b3 by which it can' be moved up or down in them as it is desired to lower or raise the can. The can being thus supported on the frame formed of the two parts of the bail B, when it is desired to ll a lamp or other vessel from it it may be easily tipped over into the position shown in Fig. 3.
E is a faucet.
C is a screw-cap covering the aperture through which the can is filled. In the threaded seat of this screw-cap is formed a small hole c for the admission of the air necessary to make the oil run freely from the faucet. This hole is uncovered when the faucet is used by unscrewing the cap slightly. The sides of the folding parts composing the bail B must be sufficiently long to enable them to pass easily over the faucet when the can is to be putin position for filling lamps.
When it is .desired to move the can, the ratchet-bar b2 is lifted out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth describedand folded upon the outer folding part b, and the two folding parts -of the bail are moved outward and around over the can, brought together at the top, and fastened by the clasp D, bringing the ratchet-bar and bail into the position shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is-f- 1. A coal oil can and lamp iller having a bail or handle composed of two corresponding parts, one folding over the other, attached IOO at their ends to opposite sides of the can by a pivot bolt and adapted to be separated and reversed and brought under the bottom lof the can forming a support within which the can is suspended by the pivot bolt, with means for preventing the two parts of the support from spreading, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. A coal oil can and lamp filler provided with a faucet for emptying its contents and with an aperture covered with a screw cap for filling it, the seat of the screw cap having near its bottom an air hole, and with a handle, or bail, B, composed of two parts b, b, journaled one above the other on a bolt, or rivet, b passing through their ends and through the sides of the can at a point on the medial line of the circumference of the can and nearer its top than its bottom, the two parts adapted to be separated and reversed to form a support for the can in which it is hung on the rivet b as a pivot, the outer folding part b, of the bail,
having a folding ratchet bar b2, suitably attached to it., adapted to engage ratchet teeth b4 in the other or inner folding part ZJ, of the bail, when the two parts are arranged to form a support for the can and keep them from spreading apart, together with a spring clasp D, on the top of the can, adapted to embrace the two folding parts of the bail when brought together to form a handle by which to carry the can, and to be turned back onto the can and release the two folding parts when they are to be arranged as a support, all con structed and arranged, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
