SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,853, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed November 6,1897. Serial No. 657,686. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DOUGLAS GRAVES, of St. Ansgar, in the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved bag-holder or sack-holder which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to securely fasten the open mouth of the bag in place on a hopper or other suitable support to permit of conveniently filling the bag or sack.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with parts in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same with the supportingbeam for the hopper in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View of the improvement on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same with the parts in a different position.

The improved bag-holder is provided with a hopper or spout A, which forms a support for the bag, having hooks B for attaching the hopper to a beam 0 or other support for the hopper or spout, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower end of the hopper A is formed with an external rim A, over which is adapted to be passed the mouth of a bagD to be filled with the material passing throughthe 110pper A.

On one side of the hopperis arranged a pin E, mounted to turn in suitable bearings F F, attached to the side of the said hopper, and the lower end of this pin is formed with a slot E, preferably made diametrical, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to receive the edge of part of the bag material at the mouth thereof above the rim A, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 1. On the pin E is also formed or secured a lockin g-pin E for engagement with ratchet-teeth F formed on the upper edge of the bearing F, so that when the operator turns the pin E at the time the bag material is engaged with the slot E, as shown in Fig. 4:, then the said pin winds up part of the bag material and draws the mouth of the bag very tight on the hopper A over the rim A, so as to hold the bag in place during the filling operation. Now when the pin E is turned for the purpose mentioned the pin E engages one of the teeth F so as to lock the pin E in place and hold the, bag in a firm position on the lower end of the hopper A. When the bag is filled, the pin E is moved upward to'disengage the pin E from the corresponding tooth F to allow of turning the pin E in the opposite direction to unwind the bag material and release the mouth of the bag from the end of the hopper A. The upward sliding motion of the pin E is limited bya stop-pin E adapted to engage the lower edge'of the bearing F.

The device is very simple and durable in construction, is not liable to get out of order, and can be conveniently manipulated to firmly lock the mouth of the bag in place on the lower end of the hopper A or other suitable similar support for the bag.

Having thus fully described my invention,

.1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A bag-holder provided with a'tightening in place on the bag-support, the said device consisting of a pin formed at one endwith a slot for engaging the edge of the bag material at'the mouth of the bag, and hearings in which the pin is mounted to be turned, one of the bearings being provided with ratchet-teeth for engagement by a locking pin or pawl on the said pin, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of a hopper or spout, forming a support for a bag, the "hopper or spout having an open lower end around which the mouth of the bag may extend, bearings attached to the hopper or spout, and a verticallyextending pin mounted to turn in said bearings and having its lower end extended into proximity with the mouth of the hopper.
