IMPROVEMENT IN BIRD-SEED RESERVOIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,145, dated March 11, 1879 application filed July 13, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OWEN W. TAFT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Bird- Seed Reservoirs, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to a means for preserving canary and other seed used as birdfood, preventing it from being wasted, protecting it from rats and mice, and holding it at all times in readiness for use.

The invention consists, essentially, in a novel construction of a reservoir adapted to the holding of seed, and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts, whereby provision is made for holding it in readiness for use, and for facilitating such use, either separately and alone or in connection with a bird-cage, as hereinafter particularly described. 7

In the accompanying drawings,Figure1 represents a side view of a reservoir embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 represents the reservoir with a cage suspended from it.- Fig. 3 represents the reservoir interposed between the bottom of a cage and the stand or foot which supports the same when not suspended.

The reservoir A is of oval or oblong spheroidal shape, and is provided with a flaring mouth or neck, a, resembling the neck of a bottle. It is suspended by pivots b b in a frame, B, of elliptical form, which may be of cast or wrought metal, or any other suitable material.

By this arrangement of the reservoir in the frame the upright position of the former is insured, while at the same time it is enabled to be tipped over, when desired, in order to pour out the contents, as shown in Fig. 3.

The frame B may be provided with means for suspending it from a hook, or for supporting it upon a table or other surface, either alone or in connection with a cage; or it may be provided with means for securing it between the bottom of a cage and the stand or foot which supports the same. As here shown, it is provided with a chain, (3, by which it may be suspended from a hook or other projection, and also provided at its lower end with a hook, D, by means of which a birdcage, E, may be suspended from it, as shown in Fig. 2. It is also shown as provided with screw caps or ferrules G G by means of which it may be interposed between the bottom of a cage and the supporting stand or foot.

Referring to Fig. 3, the birdcage E is shown as provided with a bathing-cup, h, attached to its bottom in the manner described in my patent of May 30, 1876, No. 178,203, and with a supporting stand or foot, 2', which two parts are shown as attachable and de-. tachable by means of screw-threaded collars or caps. reservoir A is interposed between the cup h and stand z, and attached thereto by connectin g the screw caps or ferrules G G to the screw-threaded'parts of the cup and the stand, respectively.

If desired, the frame B. may be provided with a permanent foot or stand, and it may also be permanently attached to the bottom of the cage.

In whatever manner the reservoig may be used in connection with the frame, as described, it may be readily tipped or tilted, as shown in Fig. 3, in order to pour out the contents or to replenish a seed-cup, represented in dotted lines as held in the hand to receive the seed from the reservoir.

In some cases the reservoir may be provided with an opening in the bottom or side, furnished with a valve, so that the seed may be discharged without tipping the reservoir.

When it is desired to use the reservoir alone, or to suspend a cage from it, the frame B may be dispensed with, and a chain may be attached to the neck a, so that the reservoir may be suspended like an ordinary gold-fish globe, and'the cage may be suspended from the hook 1, attached to the bottom of the reservoir.

The reservoir A may be arranged to be held in place in the frame by various means other than pivots-as, for example, by springs, or by engaging with a socket in the frame or stand.

In some cases the reservoir may be provided with a screw-cap similar to those shown on the frame B, for attaching it to the cage, and an other for attaching it to the stand or foot.
