FILLING DEVICE FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,813, dated February 23, 1897.
Application filed July 29, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALDO L. UPSON, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Filling Devices for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a broken view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a lamp-fount provided with one form which a filling device constructed in accordance with my invention may assume, the device being shown in its closed position; Fig. 2, a similar but less comprehensive view showing the device in its open position; Fig. 3, a detached perspective view of the supplemental nipple.
My invention relates to an improvement in filling devices for lamps, the object being to produce a simple, compact, and convenient device constructed with particular reference to the avoidance of the use of a removable threaded filler-cap and for application to any ordinarylamp-fountby discardingthe threaded filler-cap thereof.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a filling device having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a filler-cap A, having the same general form as the ordinary filler-caps heretofore used, with the exception that its shank or stem A is made smooth instead of being threaded. This filler-cap is rigidly secured to the outer end of the outer member B of a sectional stem, comprising also an inner memberB, the outer end of which is pivotally secured to the inner end of the outer member B by means of a horizontal pivot 19. The said stem passes through a tubular bearing C, formed for its reception, and secured to a supplemental nipple C, which is externally threaded near its enlarged outer end for being screwed into a fixed nipple D, mounted in the top of the lamp-fount E in the usual manner. supplemental nipple is knurled to facilitate its application to and removal from the fixed nipple D. The supplemental nipple is constructed at its inner end, as shown, with lateral andlongitudinal openings or and a, which discharge the oil poured into the nipple into the fount at a point below the fixed nipple, through the inner end of which the inner end of the supplemental nipple is considerably projected downward, as clearly shown by the drawings. A spiral spring F, encircling the inner portion of the sectional stem, is interposed between the bearingC and a nut Gr, applied to the inner end of the inner member B of the said stem, the said spring exerting a constant effort to hold the filler-cap A down upon the horizontal flange C of the supplemental nipple.
lVhen it is desired to fill the lamp, the fillercap A is grasped by the fingers and lifted against the tension of the spring F, which is compressed until the joint of the sectional stem has been raised sufficiently above the bearing C of the supplemental nipple to permit the outer member of the stem to be tilted to the position in which it is shown by Fig. 2, whereby the inner end of the said outer member isengaged with the outer end of the bearing and the cap supported in its lifted and tilted position, in which it is out of the wayfor the filling of the lamp, after which it is brought into line with the bearing, when the spring will reassert itself to draw it down into its normal and closed position.
I particularly wish to call attention to the fact that the cap, supplemental nipple, sectional stem, and spring are organized together, so that they can be applied to and re moved from the lamp-fount together. As the device is organized independently of the fount it is very easily assembled, and if it becomes deranged it is readily removed therefrom for the purpose of repair. Furthermore, as the device is organized by itself it can be used in any lamp having a fixed nipple of suitable size to receive it, as it is only necessary to discard the ordinary nipple of the lamp and put myimproved device in its place.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes from the construction herein shown and described may be made,
and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a filling device for lamps, the combination with a filler-cap, of a sectional stem rigidly secured thereto, a supplemental nipple adapted to be introduced into the fixed nipple of a lamp-fount, and a spring applied to the inner end of the sectional stem.
2. In a filling device for lamps, the combination with a filler-cap, of a sectional stem having the said cap secured to the outer end of its outer member, the inner end of which is pivotally attached to the outer end of the inner member,a supplemental nipple adapted to be introduced into the fixed nipple of an ordinary lamp-fount, and provided with a bearing for the said stem, and a spring engaging With the sectional stem and exerting a constant effort to keep the filler-cap upon its seat upon the outer end of the supplemental nipple.
3. In a filling device for lamps, th'e combination with a lamp-fount, of a fixed nipple located therein, a supplemental nipple fitting into the said fixed nipple and adapted in length to project downward through and below the same, its projecting lower end being form ed with openings for discharging into the fount the oil poured into its upper end, a filler-cap adapted to come to a seat upon the supplemental nipple, and a sectional stem having bearing in the lower end of the supplemental nipple and having the said cap secured to its outer or upper end.
