Description

J. 0. SMYTHEQ Miners Lamp.
No. 204,628. Patented June 4,1878..
p N.F-"TI'ER5, FHOTO-LITHQGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. SMYTHE, OF PLYMOUTH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM SMYTHE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MINERS LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,628, dated June 4, 1878; application filed May 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. SMYTHE, of the borough of Plymouth, in the county of Duzerne, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Lamps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a lamp which will permit the use of the lighter oils-such as kerosene and like oils-in miners lamps, by preventing excessive flow of such oils to the spout by dividing the body of the lamp from the neck, or into two parts horizontally, by means of a metal disk, the lower part or dlVlSlOIl containing the oil, which oil is conveyed by a small wick to the upper part or neck through a small tube placed in the dividing-disk.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a miner's lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents the body of the lamp, provided with the usual hook B, and the upper end of the lamp made conical and provided with a hinged cover, 0.
The interior of the lamp A is, by a horizontal disk, D, divided into two chambers, D and D*, the lower chamber, D forming the oil-reservoir, into which the oil is admitted through an inlet-spout, F, having a screw-cap, a. From the upper chamber, D projects the neck or Wick-tube I. In the disk or partition D is a short tube, 11, for the passage of a small wick, b, which feeds the oil from the reservoir to a large wick, H, that is passed through the neck or tube I.
The small wick b is incorporated with the large wick H, and acts as a feeder to it to supply it with oil.
It will be seen that if the lamp is filled with oil through the tube F, the upper wick H will derive its supply of oil from the smaller Wick b, and that, the wick I) being of small dimensions, the supply of oil will be controlled to moderate quantity.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A miner's lamp divided into an upper and a lower chamber, the latter forming the oil-reservoir, and provided with a small wick to convey the oil to the upper chamber and to a large wick passing from said upper chamber through the neck or tube of the lamp, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a lamp, A, interior division D, forming two chambers, D Dfldnlei; F, small wick-tube b, and neck or tube I, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day'of April, 1878.
JAMES C. SMYTHE.
