IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE-OILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,729, dated April 23, 1878; application filed March 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HUTGHINSON, J r., of Salem, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine-Oilers or automatic lubricators; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical and transverse section, of an oiler comprising my invention.
The said oiler contains means of compressing the wick to regulate its delivery of oil. It also has a wick-carrying tube adjustable lengthwise, the wick-compressing screw being separate from the wick-tube, and also adjustable lengthwise in the oiler. Furthermore, the oiler is provided with a single wick-tube to hold the wick, and such tube is movable lengthwise, or adjustable within. the plug, cap, or cover and fastening-neck of the reservoir.
In the oilers,shown in the drawings of the Letters Patent No. 133,316, dated November 26, 1872, and granted to me, the wick-supporter is represented as composed of two separate tubes, one being stationary and the other adjustable lengthwise relatively to the stationary one.
In my present oiler I have but one wicktube, A, which is represented as directly applied to the fastening-neck B, and provided with a screw, a, to screw into and through such neck B. This mode of application of the wick-tube I prefer, although I sometimes dispense with the screw and have such tube to slide with friction through the neck. When the screw a is used the wick-tube has to be revolved in order to adjust it to bring the lower end of the wick at its proper distance from the journal or surface to be oiled. Furthermore, the glass reservoir 0 of my present oiler is represented as provided with two necks, b 0, extending from it in opposite directions, each being furnished with a metallic cap or cover, d, to screw upon it. From the lower of said covers the fastening-neck e of the oiler is projected, it being a tubular screw.
The screw for compressing the wick f is shown at g as screwed into and down through the upper cover or cap at, and upon or into the wick projecting out of the upper end of the wick-tube, or a notch or opening therein, the whole being so as to compress said wick, in order to diminish or gage the flowage of oil through it.
Frequently it happens that a capillary wick will deliver oil too fast, and consequently waste of oil and other evil results follow therefrom. It is therefore desirable to have a means of regulating the discharge of the oil by the wick, or to reduce such as may be desirable, and as the wick-tube has to be movable or adjustable, to properly adapt it to the surface to be oiled, it necessarily follows that the means of compressing the wick should be also movable with or adjustable relatively to the tube.
By having the wick-compressing screw project through and out of the upper cap d, access to it readily can be obtained to revolve it without first requiring the removal of the cap.
Having thus described my new lubricator, What I claim as of my invention is as follows:
1. In an oiler-case constructed as herein described, the wick-tube A, adjustable lengthwise in or with respect to the reservoir 0, and in combination with the adjustable wick-coinpressor g, as and for the purpose explained.
2. The wick-tube A, projecting through and beyond the neck B and 0, adjustable lengthwise therein, as set forth.
3. The wick-tube A, arranged in and projecting from the case, as described, and up within the oil-reservoir, and provided with a male screw, or, to screw into the outer case or its cap, or the neck thereof, all substantially as set forth.
