Description

P. J. MILLER.
MINERS' LAMP.
No.- 435,120. Patented Aug. 26, 1890.
qwih Laooeo amoemfoz Pe terlMiu er UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER J. MILLER, OF UPPER LEH IGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MINERS LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,120, dated. August 26, 1890.
Application filed March 2'7, 1890. Serial No. 345,523- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Lehigh, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Miners Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in miners lamps.
The object of the invention is to provide a ininers lamp which will prevent the oil spilling from the wick-tube when a miner is at work and in a stooping position, and in which the oil will either be consumed by the flame or returned to the lamp.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a miners lamp constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body of a miners lamp, which is constructed of suitable metal and provided with an inclined wioktube 2 and a hinged cap 3, that closes the opening 4, and the said lamp is provided with the usual hook 5, that enables the lamp to be readily attached to the hat. The mouth or end 6 of the Wick-tube 2 is flaring or funnel-shaped and brings the flame within the wick-tube to consume any oil that may flow past an annular groove 7, and to prevent the oil spilling over the miner. The wick-tube 2 is provided below the flaring mouth 6 with the annular groove 7, that is formed by beading the metal or by other suitable means, and when the lamp is tilted it is adapted to receive any oil that may drain through the wick and prevent the oil passing out of the tube, and it allows the oil when the lamp is in a vertical position to drain back.
It will readily be seen that the oil draining through the wick when the lamp is tilted will be received and retained in the annular groove 7, and should the groove become too filled the overflow will be consumed by the flame and be prevented spilling.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A miners lamp having a wick-tube provided with an annular groove 7, forming a re ceptacle for oil draining through the wick, and adapted to return the oil to the body of the lamp, substantially as and for the purpose described,
2. A miners lamp having its wick-tube provided with a flaring mouth 6 and an annular groove 7, arranged beneath the flaring mouth, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afflxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER J. MILLER. WVitnesses:
PHILIP V. WEAVER, CHARLES W. BARBER.
