To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM THORNLEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Marrickville, in the Colony of New 5 South WVales, have invented certain Improvements in Oil Lamps or Lanterns, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 9,152, bearing (late May 8, 1895; in New South Wales October 20, 1893, No. 4,687; in
[0 South Australia November 11, 1895, No. 3,310; in Victoria November 6, 1393, No; 10,944; in New Zealand January 18, 1894, No. 6,583, and in Queensland January 21, 1896, No. 3,053,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oil lamps and lanterns, and has special reference to those in which kerosene or other mineral oils are burnedand which do not necessitate the use of a chimney.
- The object of my invention is to construct and fit a lamp and its parts in such a manner that the flame cannot under ordinary usage be extinguished when the lamp is subjected to a jolting, swinging, or shaking movement, or to any combination of these.
Furthermore, my invention is such that a better system of air-supply to theburner is efiected, which materially supports combustion and adds to the lighting power of the said lamp.
My invent-ion is particularly adapted to the well-known Batton burner; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, 5 and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description.
To practically illustrate my invention and also the manner in which the same is carried into effect, the accompanying sheet or" drawings represents, in-- Figure 1, a hand lamp or lantern constructed according to my invention. This view illustrates the lower portion of the lamp in section, showing clearly the air-supply pas- 45 sage or tube, the air-chamber surrounding the burner proper, into which the air-supply passage is directed, and also the coincident slot or piercing within the bottom of the body of the lamp. Fig. 2 illustrates a section of the burner separated from the lamp-body, while Figs. 3,4, and 5 show, respectively, aside view, a top side plan, and an under side plan of Fig. 2.
The burner part a, with its oil container or reservoir 1), is fitted within the body 0 of the lamp 0 and is provided with a burner proper,

Surrounding the middle part a of the "burner proper, a and fixedly connected to the top of the oil-container b is a circular air-chamber (7, open at its top end (P and having provided at a suitable point in its lower part an opening or piercing d constituting an entrance to the said air-chamberd from an air passage or tube (1 arranged down the side of the oilcontainer 01 and whose lower end d is open and arranged to come coincident with a hole or piercing 6, formed within the bottom of the body of the lamp.
The metal of the walls of the air-chamber d, adjacent to the opening 01 as before described, depends downward at d into the top part of the air-supply passage or tube 61 and constitutes a baffle-plate to prevent the inrush of air to the air-chamber becoming too great and also forms a means for dilfusing the same around the inside walls of the airchamber (1. I wish it to be understood that the proportions of the said air-chamber (Z and also its 5 supply-passages may be varied according to the power of the light and, if necessary, the said air-passages may be duplicated, always providing that no direct draft is caused to enter the air-chamber.
My improvements are applicable to all kinds of lamps and lanterns used upon roadvehicles and railroads and also carried by the hand, and are designed for the purpose of overcoming the difiiculty experienced in preventing the same from being extinguished when moved about, jolted, or waved.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is+
1. In a lamp, the combination with the oilcontainer 1) and the burner proper a of an annular air-chamber d arranged on the oilcontainer and surrounding the burner, said chamber being open at its top and terminating at a point beneath the burner and provided at its lower end and at one side with an air-inlet (1 a vertical supply-tube 61 arranged on one side of the oil-container and connected at its upper end with the inlet d and at its lower end with an inlet 6 formed in the base of the lamp, and a depending baffle-plate d above the inlet d and between the upper end of the tube (1 and the interior of the aircha nber, substantially as described.
2. In a lamp, the combination with the oilcharnber Z) and the burner proper d of an annular air-chamber 61 arranged on the oilcontainer and surrounding the burner, said chamber being open at its top and terminating at its upper end in an inwardly-turned flange f below the burner, said chamber being provided at its lower end and at one side with an air-inlet (Z a vertical supply-tube (1 arranged on one side of the oil-container and connected at its upper end with the inlet (Z and at its lower end with an inlet 6 formed in the base of the lamp, and a depending bafiieplate cl above the inlet (Z and between the upper end of the tube d and the interior of the air-chamber, substantially as described.
