UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. AULD, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,619, dated August 12, 1873; application file January 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ELLIS AULD, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Lamp and Oiler, of which the following is a specifica tion This invention consists in combining a lamp and oiler, making an illuminated oiler, for oiling machinery, more especially at night, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a front view.
A is the can or receptacle for the oil having a portion of its bottom made fiat to prevent its being too easily overturned. When in use it will be held in the position shown in Fig. 1. V B is a spout or tube screwed into the bottom of the can, as shown, and having a movable joint, a, by which the tube may be elevated or depressed, as desired, and as partly indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. O is a short bent tube, carrying a wick, b, which extends back into the oil, and by this means forms a burner or illuminator. To protect this flame from the air, and to make it more safe, I attach to the front of the can A a metal cover, D, having a glass front, a, and an upper air-chamber, E, as shown. When not in use the tube B will be bent upward, as shown at F, Fig. 1, and when in use it will be bent downward to allow the oil to flow o'ut.
By this simple means I produce a complete lamp and oiler in one device, which will be found particularly useful for night use, and which can also be used in the day-time, if desired, as well as any other oiler.
An extra tube will be extended back into the cup A with perforations in it to allow sufficient oil to saturate the wick, to prevent the wick b from getting into and clogging up the tube B.
A screw-capped hole may be formed in the cup A, as at G, to pour in the oil.
I claim- The combination of the oiler A having the movable spout B, the lamp 0, and cover D, constructed substantially as hereinbefore set forth. y
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JAMES E. AULD. Witnesses:
J. R. DRAKE, O. N. WOODWARD.
