Description

l. L. MOU LTD N.
'Patented Dec. 2,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
WILLIAM J. L. MOULTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO JEINSEN LUBRICATOR COMPANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specifi :ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,227, dated December 2, 1873; application filed August 2, 1673.
To alt 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. L. MOUL- TON, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Dust-Excluders for Railway-Car and Carriage Axles 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention relates to a simple means by which the dust is excluded from the journals of car-axles and boxes; and it consists mainly of a ring of felt placed upon the journal in the back part of the box, in which position the upper end is held by the brass. 1t also consists ot a cork dust-excluder, which is a nonconductor of oil, in place of the ordinary wood or leather packing usually employed, placed in the ordinary slot, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Referring to the drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a box with felt and cork in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cork dust-excluder. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the felt and excluder.
A represents the cork dust-excluder, placed in the ordinary chamber or slot, the axle passing through the opening B. It should here be observed that, cork being a non-conductor and a non-absorbent of oil, it is not liable to become limp, like leather, and take up the oil, whereby its usefulness as a dust-excluder would be impaired. Furthermore, the cork is not so liable to become worn by friction as the leather. The most important feature of my invention, however, is the application of the felt ring C, placed around the axle against the inner wall of the lubricating chamber or box, in which position it is held at the top by the inner end ofthe brass bearing D. By this means the Crust that would naturally pass up the ordinary chamber or slot, in which the corkexcluder is placed, into the lubricating-chamber, is prevented. This piece of felt also acts as a regulator of the lubricating material in the mode of feeding the oil to the journal adopted by ius, that of capillary attraction, which in ordinary cases, through the medium of wicks, draws up a surplus of oil to the journal or axle, which in my present improvement is absorbed by the felt, and runs back into the oil chamber or box, while it does not prevent the lubricating material from spreading the entire length ofthe bearin g or journal. Leather or other material might be employed in this position instead of the felt, but I prefer the felt.
By this means a simple, cheap, and effective dust-excluder is had, and the oil-box kept in a far greater degree of cleanliness than by the ordinary means now employed for that purpose.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe felt ring C, placed against the inner wall of the oil-box, and having the axle passing through it, substantially as and for the purpose specilied and shown. f
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
WM. J. L. MOULTON. [L. s.]
