IMPROVEMENT IN cAR-AXLE Boxes.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, J osEPn Wnrrmmn, of Voonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, and OLNEY L.' SMITH, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators for Car-Axles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a housing or car-axle box, and the car-axle with our improved lubricator applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section ofthe same.

Our invention rela-tes, first, to an improvement in car-a-xle-boxes; and consists in the employment of a circular iiange surrounding the perforation for the journal in the outer end of the box or housing, for the purpose of keeping out dust from the box, an inner perforated partition, parallel to-t-he end of the box, being employed, having an aperture, preferably near its bottom, for the passage of oil thrown oit' the journal back into the oilreservoir, as hereinafter more fully set forth. Our invention further consists in the employment of a collar to prevent the escape of oil, situated. in the passage between the partition and the outer end of the box, the said collar being prolvided with a suitable packing. Our inven tion also consists in the employment of adustcollar on the axle, having a suitable packing.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the car-axle box or housing, having a lug or projection, B, on the under surface of the top, which ts into a groove in the block C, which bears .upon the axle l) of the car. E is a roller journaled in the frame F, provided with springs S S. The spring-frame F, carrying the roller E, is placed in the oil and carrying it to the journal D. G is a partition near the outer end of the box, provided with a perforation, a., for the passage of the axle or journal D, and an aperture, af, preferably near the bottom, for the return of any oil in the passage P back into the oil-reservoir R.
It Will be seen that, by the employment of the partition G, a passage,`P, open at the top, is formed between said partition and the end of the box, and any oil thrown off the journal will pass into the passage, being prevented from passing out of the box by the cud piece H of the latter.

In the operation of the lubrieator, the oil is carried by the roller E to the car-axle D, and is thence carried along the axle to the collar K, and, being prevented by the 'eompressible oil-tight packing b from passing farther along' the axle, is thrown down by the collar K into the passage I, from which it passes through the aperture a into the oil-chamber. L is a collar to prevent the ingress of dust. It surrounds thc axle, and is preferably made of a dish form, as shown in the drawings, though we do not confine ourselves to that precise form of collar. b is a packing between the collar L and the journal of fibrous or other suitable compressible dust-tight packing.
It will be seen, by my construction, that no oil can escape from the axle box and be wasted, and that all ingress of dust is pre vented.

We claim as our invention-'H 1. The partition G, having an aperture a, in combination with the oil-collar K, circular ange I, and dustcollar L, substantially as p and for the purpose set forth.
