Be it known thatlI, JOSEPH E. STEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gar-Axle Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lubricators for the journals of car-axles; and it consists in a saddle of approximately T shape, having a cavity in its upper part, and having longitudinal slots in such cavity on opposite sides of its lower or vertical part, combined with an absorbent pad which is arranged in the cavity, with its ends passing through the slots to depend and wipe against the journal, so that when the pad is supplied with oil or the like the journal is thereby lubricated in an effective manner, while the pendent ends or portions of the pad at the same time are kept free of the dust or grit that may find its way into the box. A feedhole in the top of the axle-box allows the absorbent pad to be supplied with oil without removing the saddle from the box.
' This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section, showing the parts in position within the box. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section, and Fig. 4 a plan or top view, of the saddle detached.

The letterA designates the axle-box having the usual opening, B, in the back, through which is inserted the journal 0 of the caraxle.
D indicates the saddle or brass resting on the journal. This saddle is T-shaped in its cross-section, and is provided with a cavity, E, in its upper part, where it abuts against the top of the box; also with two longitudinal slots, F, in the cavity, one on each side of the lower or vertical part of the article. Through the slots F extend the oppositeends of an absorbent pad, G, of felt or other similar mate- Q rial, which is arranged in the cavity E, such ends depending from the saddle and wiping against the journal. I am aware of Letters Patent No. 113,860, and I disclaim the construction of journalbearing thereinshown and described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lubricator, the saddle or brass D, constructed with 'the open-topped rectilinear recess E above it, which terminates at the sides in vertical parallel slots I, extending the length of the rectilinear recess, in combination with the absorbent pad G, arranged within .the rectilinear recess above the saddle, and having its ends depending through the vertical parallel slots to bear on the journal, substantially as described.
