SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 285,364, dated September 18, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Louis W. SCHAEFER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, E. D. in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in OarLamps, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention is especially adapted to lamps for street-cars, and particularly such cars in which the lamps are placed in boxes at diagonally opposite corners. These lamps are usually provided with a leg on. the bottom of the oil-well to enter a socket in the lamp boxes for holding the lampsin position; and the object of my invention is to combine with such lamps a drip-pan whichshall be adapted to said lamp -holding medium and require no alteration in the shapeor structure of the lamps. This and other objects 1 have accomplished by the novel means hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the pan, showing the lamp in position therein. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view thereof: Fig. 3 is a crosssection showing a frictionspring for locking the parts.

The letter A designates the oil-well of the lamp, having its bottom provided with the usual leg, B, and 0 indicates the drip-pan. This pan is provided on its bottom with a leg, D, which is fitted to the socket of the lampbox, before mentioned, and to which is fitted the leg B of the lamp, so that while the pan may be held in position in the box by means of its leg, the latter also answers the purpose of retaining the lamp in position in the pan by receiving in it the leg B of the lamp.
On the inner surface of the leg D of the pan is arranged a spring, F, which bears against the outer surface of the leg B of the lamp, and by its frictional contact therewith serves to prevent the accidental displacement of the lamp. The advantage peculiar to this spring F is that it leaves the pan entirely solid, and thus is not liable to cause leakage, while it is concealed from view, and is not liable to get out of order. It is evident that the spring F can also be arranged on the leg B of the lamp to act on the leg D of the pan.
The rim G of the pan is provided with a flange, H, which projects inwardly and downwardly therefrom, and by this flange the oil that may accumulate in the pan is effectually prevented from overflowing in the shaking of the pan by the motion of the car, so that the effect of the pan is thereby materially increased.
It should be remarked that my invention can also be applied to center lamps of cars, in which case the pan will be supported on the pendent leg B of the lamp by means of the friction-spring.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the oil-well, A, of a lamp having a depending leg, B, of a drip pan having at its outer edge a flange, H, and a leg depending from its bottom wall, and into which the leg of the oil-well fits, said leg of the drip-pan being constructed to enter the socket of a lamp-supporting box to support said drip-pan and lamp, substantially as described.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the drip-pan having the leg D on its bottom, the lamp having the leg B on the bottom of its oil-well fitted to said leg of the pan, and the friction-spring F, arranged on one leg to act on the other.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the drip-pan having the leg D on its bottom, and having its rim provided with the inwardly and downwardly projecting flange H to prevent overflow, with the lamp having the leg B fitted to said leg of the pan.
