U NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO 1). MOTT, JR, OF MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA.
INVALID-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,149, dated February 28, 1882;
Application filed January 16, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Beit known that I, LORENZO D. MOTT, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, haveiuvented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Beds and Spring Bed- Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings-and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in invalid-beds and spring bed-bottoms; and the invention consists in novel features ofconstrnction and combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically desig nated in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view or plan; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section, showing the head and foot sections respectively raised and lowered to form a reclining-chair; Fig. 4C, detached view, in perspective, ot'one of the springs; Fig. 5, detach ed sectional view, to be hereinafter referred to.
In the drawings, A A represent the side rails of my improved bed, connected together by cross-bars a a at. These side rails are formed with head and foot sections A A pivotally connected, so as to be respectively raised and lowered to form an invalid-chair, all as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The head-section A is formed by cutting or splitting the side rails about onethird theirlength and connecting said cut-away portions a a to the side rails by hinges a a and said side rails are provided on their inner sides with ratchet-bars G G, with which pivoted pawls c 0, connected to the hinged portions a a and together by cross-bar c, engage for securing the section A in a raised or inclined position, and which pawls are operated through the medium of a cord, 0 The footqfion A is formed by cutting the side rails off bout one-third of their length from their rear ends and connecting said cut-away por- The hinged sectldll is provided with pivoted ratchet-bars D, connected together bycross-bar d, and which ratchet-bars engage with lugs b b on the rear supporting-legs, B B, for securin g said hinged section A in a lowered or inclined position. The side rails are provided at the ends with right-angled metallic straps e, which project a short distance beyond the ends thereof to form recesses c for the reception of the removable or detachable head and foot boards E E.
F represents transverse spring-slats, having slotted ends f for the reception of the headed bolts or screws f, by which the slats are socured in position, while permitting the necessary longitudinal play of the slats, as they are elongated when deflected from any shape or form they may assume other than when in normal position. Each spring-slat F is placed between and below two side slats, G G, which may also be elastic and of such a length that when pressed downward their ends may come in contact with and rest upon the side rails, A A. These slats G G are centrally connected together by a cross-bar, g, which is connected to the slat F by a threaded bolt, 9, and nut 9 as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and about midway between the ends and center of the slat F are secured bent springs [I H, upon which the slats G G are secured for giving them additional elasticity.
The side rails, A A, are beveled on their upper and inner sides for the purpose of preventing the fastening bolts or screws f from being drawn or sprung out from the spring of the slats when in use. Pieces of tin h are arranged between the slats F and the side rails, at their intersections, for obviating friction of the wood and the screeching noise incident to such friction.
My improvements, as above described, form a. novel attachment of invalid-bed and spring bed-bottom adapted to be easily and readily applied to the ordinary bedstead, or used as a cot-bed by applying the supporting-legs B, which can be pivotall y connected, so as to fold up out of the way, or detachabl y secured thereto in any of the usual ways common in cot-beds.
By my improved construction and arrangement of spring-slats light weights will be supported by the elasticity of the central slats, F, but heavy weights will bring the ends of the side slats, G G, into contact with the side'rails,
IOC
A, so that the weight will be supported by the elasticity of all the slats and supporting-springs Having thus described iny'invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the side rails, A A, having ratchet-bars C O secured to their inner side, and supporting-legs B B, provided with lugs b b, of the hinged or pivoted head-section A a a, formed from and forming a portion of the main side rails, A A, having pivoted pawls c c, and the hinged or pivoted foot-section A having the pivoted ratchet-bars D D, the several parts constructed and arranged relatively to each other substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the side rails, A A, of the transverse spring-slats F,having the bent springs H H, transverse side slats, G G, connecting crossbar g, and threaded belt or screw and nut g 9 substantiall Y in the manner as and for the purpose herein s own and described.
3. The combination of the side rails, beveled on their inner and upper sides, spring-slats F, 25 having slotted ends, headed securing bolts or screws f, and the pieces of tin 71, arranged between the ends of said slats and side rails, all substantially in the manner as and for the purposes herein shown and described. 0
, 4. The combination, with the side rails and head and foot boards, of the right-angled metallic straps a, secured to and projecting beyond the ends of said side rails, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein 5 shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
