Description

S. LANDGRAF.
Improvement in Spring-Bed Bottoms, &c. No; 132,673. Patented 0m. 29, I872.
NITED STATES SEBASTIAN LANDGRAF, OF NEWYOBK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS, &c
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 32,673, dated October 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEBASTIAN LANDGRAF,
. of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented an Improvement in Spring Bed Bottoms and Seats, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of slats and springs whereby a good and durable bed-bottom is produced at a comparatively low cost, and whereby the disagreeable noises produced in ordinary spring bed-bottoms by the working of the springs is obviated.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a bed-bottom made according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the frame of the bed-bottom. It is of rectangular form, and has secured to the upper side of its transverse end pieces rails B B,
' from which the slats O O are supported. These slats O G are arranged lengthwise of the frame, and all connected by a cross-piece, D, and are f urni shed at their ends with India-rubber straps piece D of the slats O G. The ends of these springs or supports work through metal loops at a, provided on the under side of the said cross-piece. India-rubber straps or springs G G, secured to the upper edge of the sides of the frame A, pass round the upper portions of the supports E E, and thereby tend to throw or hold them up so as to assist them in supporting the slats. The weight'of a person on the slats by depressing them depresses the supports E, and extends their springs G G, and also .extends the elastic straps or springs F'F, thereby taking up the strain in a very yielding manner. The slats, being supported at the middle as well as at the ends, render the bed-bottom much less likely to get out of order; but one of the most important features of the bed-bottom is its noiselessness when in use.
Though only illustrated in its application to bed-bottoms, the invention can be applied to a seat with equal advantages.
Claim.
The spring bed bottom or seat, composed of the slats (l U, the metal springs or supports E E, the India-rubber springs G G and F F, the rails B B, and the frame A, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. 1
