UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
LEONARD K. KLINE, OF BROGKPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
- PRESSURE OR WEIGHT EQUALIZER FOR BED-BOTTOMS, 84c.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 264,540, dated September 19, 1882.
Application filed July 15, 1882. (Model.)
f0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD K. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockport, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Device for Equalizing the Pressure of Weight and Distributing the same; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for equalizing the pressure or weight and distributing the same over the whole surface, for bed-bottoms and other similar purposes.
Figure l is a perspective view, showing the device applied to a bed-bottom; Fig. 2, asectional View.
B is the bottom or carrying bar.
A is the bar carrying the slats n n or other surface.
O O are springs, and may be of the form shown, spiral, or any other form adapted to the purpose.
E E are strips or arms, preferably of iron, supporting the bar A, and pivoted to it at i i, and at h h to D D, which are double levers pivoted together at G under the middle of the supporting-bar B, to which they are pivotally attached at F Fby bolts, upon which they move in the slotted openings f f.
When a weight is placed upon the surface supported by A the pressure compresses the springs 0 (Land the strips E, pressing down upon the lever D at h, raises thejoint at G, and necessarily depresses the opposite end of the bar A by the reflex action of the levers, so that the barA mustbe depressed equally in its whole length without reference to the position of the weight or pressure applied.
I only show the device applied to the ends of a bed-bottom; but I do not restrict myself to this, as in some cases it may be advisable to have it also applied to the sides, which can readily be done.
I do not confine myself simply to this application, as it maybe used not only on bed-bottoms, but in platform-scales, and in many other similar cases.
I do not claim anything new in the construction of the bed-bottom-such as slats, springs, &c.--and only use this form to illustrate the application of my device.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is--
The bars B and A, combined with the levers D D, pivotally connected at their inner ends and jointed to B, with a sliding joint or falcrum Ff, and the strips or arms E E, pivoted at each end to the levers D and the frame A, respectively, and springs U U, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
LEONARD K. KLINE.
