SEESAW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,571, dated VFebruary 14, 1852.,

.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUTHER J. ADAMS, ot' Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seesaws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in seesaws; and it consists, first, in making the seesaw out of a number ot' different pieces, which areihinged together so that the seesaw can be folded up when not in use, and thus be packed into very small space; second, in making the seesaw out of a number of diii'erent pieces, which are hinged together, and attaching to the base a hinged or pivoted brace,

which can be raised upward, so as to catch under the center of the hinged top, and thus support the top in a raised position, ready for use, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is tov provide a seesaw which can be folded up either for transportation or so as to occupy but very little space when not inuse, and thus enable children to keep a seesaw in the house without having it take up too much room or require any permanent fixture.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical section ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation ot the seesaw folded together.

A represents the hase, which may-be of any desired length or width, and to which the two supportingboards B are hinged or pivoted, as shown. These boards have secured to their outer ends the hinges C, which serve to unite them with the outer ends ofthe two boards D, (upon the outer ends of which the children sit while they seesaw up an d do-wn,) and have their inner ends hinged together by means of the,

hinge F.

VJointed loosely upon the top of each end of the hase is 'a supporting rod or brace, G, which is preferably bent into the form shown in Fig. 2, and which catches in a notch which is formed equally in the end of. each ot the two boards. When this brace is raised into a vertical position after the seesaw has been opened out, the two ends are supported in sucha manner as to form, as it were, one solid continuous board. Theends ofthe two supporting boards g .When the seesaw is no longer needed or when it is to be packed up for transporta-tion, the metallic brace G is folded down upon either one of the bracing-boards, the two top boards have their inner ends forced down, and

the seesaw then assumes the position shown in Fig. 3. While folded together the outer ends of the boards can be held securely together by means of a spring, wire, or band, l, as shown.

Where the seesaw is to be used in the house or any place where the room is limited, after having been used the seesaw can be folded up, as shown, and stood up like a post, of which the base forms the foot, or can be laid down upon its side, as may be most convenient. By means ot' this construction these seesaws'can be used in the house, can be sent out to pleasure-grounds at picnics, and enjoyed by the children in many ways Where the common form of seesaw could not he used at all.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a seesaw, the combination of the board D with rocking supports, to which the board is loosely attached, substantially as shown.

2. The combination of the base, the t-Wo supporting-boards B, the two hinged top boards, and the metallic supportingbrace, substantially as described.

3. 1n a seesaw, the combination of the board D, jointed at its center, with the hinges G, the supports B, loosely connected to the base A, and the pivoted brace G, the parts being adapt ed to be folded together, substantially as specified.
