UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY SMITH, 'oF GHARLOT'IEVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN UNDERTAKERS STOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,536, dated September 9, 1879; application filed May 14, 1879.
To all 'whomit may concern. I
Be it known that I, HENRY SMITH, of Charlotteville, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Undertakers Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the constructionot' the stools used by undertakers as a support for burial-caskets, &c.
Heretofore these stools have been made with the several parts rigidly connected together, thus rendering them clumsy in. construction and awkward to handle. v
The object of this invention is to make the said stools so that they can be folded.
. It consists in pivoting the upper ends of the legs on one side to those on the opposite side, just below the top bar of the stool, and connecting the legs midway of the length of the stool by a jointed rod having its ends pivoted to opposite side bars, whereby the legs are capable'of being folded together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l. is a perspective view of my in'iprovement, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Referring to the drawings, the legsA A are joined together at the top by a bar, B, and on the side by bars 0 0, rigidly attached to the legs. Legs D D are also joined together on the side by bars E E rigidly attached to the legs at the ends; but the tops of these legs are pivoted to legs A A just under top bar, B, as clearly shown at a, so that legs D D swing to and from legs A A. Midway of the length of the stool the two pairs of legs are connected together by a jointed rod, F, the
ends whereof are pivoted in jaws b b, fixed to.
pivoted connection allows the legs to be folded toward each other and in contact.
. By this arrangement it will be seen that a folding stool is provided for under-takers pun poses that can be made light and graceful in appearance, possesses the requisite strength, and is susceptible of being folded into a small space, is easily handled, and readily packed for transportation or storage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described undertakers stool, consisting of the top bar, B, the legs A, connected together by side bars, 0, and rigidly attached to the said top bar, the legs D, connected together by side bars, E, and pivoted to the inner side of the legs A just under the top bar, and the jointed rod F, pivoted to the jaws b, attached to the said side bars about midway of their length, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY SMITH. Witnesses:
