FOLDING GOT.
Patented Dec. 20,1881

(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. G. FREDERICK GROTE, JR, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251;111, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed September 24, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, J. G. FREDERICK GROTE, Jr., of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cots, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the well-known folding or camp cot; and my improvement consists in forming one or both ends of each side bar with a diagonally-oblique downward and outward slope for the hereinafter-described hinged attachment of similarly but reversely sloped short sections, so as, on the attachment of the canvas, to form upslanting head-rest or head and foot rests,
which, when the cot-is to be packed for stowage or shipment, are capable of being folded snugly against the cot-body, as hereinafter explained, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cot embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the cot in its folded condition. Fig. 3 shows the cot in its packed form, suitable for stowage or transportation. Fig. 4 represents a portion of a scantling severed obliquely for the body and head-piece, respectively. Fig. 5 shows the head-piece re versed to the position at which it is hinged to the body for use. Fig. 6 represents a modification of my hinged attachment.
A are the side bars, having the represented diagonally-oblique extremities a.
B B are the similarly-sloped head and foot pieces, having hinges b 1) connecting them by their upper outer faces to the corresponding faces of the side bars, in the manner shown. This method of hinging the side and head and foot bars together has the advantages of rendering these joints of the cot much. stronger and the cot itself capable of being folded into (No model.)
a smaller and more compact bundle for storage or transportation than is possible with cots as formerly constructed. The web or canvas 0 having been attached in the usual manner, the cot is found to possess a level body and upsloping head and foot portions, as shown in Fig. 1.
D represents the customary crossed and folding legs.
For ordinary diurnal stowage the cot is conveniently put into the form shown in Fig. 2; but for more'protracted stowage or for transportation the legs are withdrawn and the cot is rolled up into the form shown in Fig. 3, the legs being either inclosed or packed separately, as may be desired.
For greater strength and durability the hinges employed to connect the upsloping portions with the body may be of the box form, as shown at Fig. 6. v
I am aware that it is not broadly new to form a cot with side bars, having end portions hinged thereto at a rising angle and adapted tobe folded up with the said side bars.
I claim as new and of my invention- The folding cot consisting of longitudinal side bars, A, head and foot sections, B B, hinges b b, connecting the said sections at a rising angle to the ends of the upper inclined outer faces of the said side bars, web or canvas O, and folding legs D, socketed in said side bars at a right angle to the face to which the said hinges are attached, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
J. G. FREDERICK GROTE, JR.
