FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,960, dated May 26, 1896.
Application filed December 20, 1895. Serial No. 572,771. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenesaw, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Folding Cot, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding cots, and has for its object to provide a simple, convenient, and efficient construction of double cot or one adapted to the use of two persons, the said cotbeing capable of being folded compactly into the space ordinarily required for a single cot.
A further object of the invention is to construct such cot in a manner that will prevent the two occupants from rolling together and encroaching upon each others space, and to so construct and arrange the legs or supports of the cot as to limit the opening or unfolding of the same preparatory to use, and obviate strain upon the canvas or other material with which the cot-frame is covered.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the improved double cot with the textile covering partly broken away to show the construction of the cot frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the folded cot. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the side rails of the improved cotframe, each of which is provided at its extremities with inwardly and downwardly inclining legs or supports 2, the said legs being connected to the rails 1 by a mortised joint and through-bolt or rivet 3, or in any convenient manner. The legs 2 converge downwardly to a common point at each end of the cot, and are connected firmly together by means of a hinge 4:.
5 designates a medial rail, which, when the cot is opened, occupies a central position and extends longitudinally of the cot and lies in the proximal horizontal plane of the side rails 1. This middle rail is also provided at its extremities with legs or supports 5, located within the legs 2 of one of the side rails and pivotally connected therewith at points intermediate the ends of both pairs of legs 2 and 5 by means of bolts or other suitable pivoting devices, as shown at 6.
7 indicates a pair of metal corner-braces connecting the middle rail 4E and its legs 5 and serving to impart rigidity to the cotframe. A pair of auxiliary legs or supports 8 are hingedly connected at their upper ends to the central frame comprised by the middle rail 4 and legs 5 in such manner that the upper ends of said legs 8 abut against the end portions of the middle rail, thereby acting as stops for preventing the further spreading of the legs. The auxiliary legs 8 are pivotally connected intermediate their ends to the legs 2 at points intermediate the ends of the latter. The legs or supports 5 and 8 are located in the same transverse planes and at a less distance apart than the legs or supports 2, so that they may readily fold together within the same in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawings. The legs or supports 5* of the middle rail are also made sufficiently shorter than the outside legs 2 to allow the middle rail to fold within or beneath the side rail 1 when the cot-frame is folded, and the auxiliary legs 8 correspond in length to those 5. It will thus be seen that three separate and independent frames are formed, two of which comprise the two side rails and their legs, and the third the middle rail and its legs, and that these frames are capable of being folded within each other, so that the cot-frame as a Whole may be closed compactly for the purposes of economizing space, storage, or transportation. A covering of canvas or any suitable textile material 9 is tacked or secured in any convenient manner at its opposite side edges to the side rails l and at its centralportion to the medial rail 4:.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a very simple and desirable double cot is obtained, in which, by reason of the presence of the central rail, it will be impossible for the two occupants thereof to roll together and interfere with each others rest; also that by reason of the butt-joint between ICO Having thus described the inventionnvhat is claimed as new is 1. A folding cot, comprising the side rails and an intermediate rail all arranged in approximatelythe same horizontal plane and each provided at its ends with legs rigidly connected thereto and extending substantially at right angles, the legs of each rail crossing those of the adjacent rail and being connected pivotally thereto, the legs of the side rails being pivotally connected to each other at their bottom ends, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described double cot, com.- prising a pair of U-shaped or three -sided frames having their leg portions hinged together at the bottom, a supplemental frame of similar constructionhavingits leg portions pivotally connected to the legs of one of the aforesaid frames, and a pair of auxiliary legs having a hinged connection with the supplemental frame and adapted to abut against the same for limiting the opening or unfolding of the cot-frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
