Description

(No Model.) I
B. H. CARTER.
TRANSOM ADJUSTER.
No. 251,028. Patented Dec. 20,1881.
FIQI.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN H. CARTER, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
TRANSOM-ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 251,028, dated December 20, 1881, Application filed June 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Transom-Adjusters, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door, showing the transom open. Fig. 2 is a sectional eEevation, showing the same cut vertically through the center.
"A represents the frame and casing of the door; B, the transom; G, the adjusting-spring; D, the adjusting-cord; E, the transom-rail; E, the glass panel of the door; G, the door-knob; H, the adjusting-weight.
The following is the construction and operation of the same.
I construct any suitable spiralspring,C, and attach itto the door-post, as shown in the drawings. I connect the same to the transom B with an eyebolt or any suitable attachment, a little nearer to the pivot than the outer edge of the same, either above or below the center.
I then attach the cord 1) close to the outer corner of the transom and on the opposite side from the spring attachment. I attach the weight H, of the desired weight to balance the spring 0, so that in whatever position the transom may be it will be equally balanced and have no tendency to swing or revolve in either direction.
By drawing down the cord D the transom is closed and the weight holds it in position, and when it is necessary to open the transom the weight H is lifted, and the spring 0 immediately draws the same open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the spiral spring 0, the cord D, and weight H, for the purpose of balancin g and operating the pivoted transom B, as and for the purposes set forth.
BENJAMIN H. CARTER.
