MFETERS, H1010 L ThOGRAP UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSEL G. DUDLY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,663, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed August 12, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUssEL G. DUDLY, of Jersey Oity,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and val uable Improvement in Blind-Slat Operators and Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referen cemarked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my improved hurglaralarm slat-operator. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in blind-slat operators; and it consists in certain novel combinations of parts for the purpose of creating an alarm when an efi'ort is made to move. the slats from the outside, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the window-casing, and B the shutter, having the slats O journaled therein and fleXi bly connected by the bar D.
Gr indicates a metallic shaft extending through the hinged side rail of the shutter, and secured by its flattened end a to one of the slats O in any suitable manner. This shaft has on its outer end a beveled gear, d, that engages, when the shutter is closed, a similar gear, 1), upon the outer end of a shaft, H, extending through the contiguous jamb of the window-casing, and having its bearings therein. The rotation of the shaft H, which is had by turning a knob or handle, I, on its inner end, communicates rotary motion to the shaft G, and necessarily operates to open or close the slats. These features are old and Well known in slat-operators, and therefore no broad claim is made thereto.
The shaft H, or, if desired, the neck of the handle I, is provided with an upright rectangular hook, c.
K indicates a bell, arranged at a suitable distance above the said handle, and fixed to a sounding an alarm.
post projecting from the casing A, and L indicates a metallic plate secured in a vertical position to the said casing, and provided at its upper and lower ends, respectively, with the projecting arms 6 c, that carry a metallic rod, f. The upper arm, 6, of the plate L is within the circumference of the bell, and the rod f passes beyond its edge. It is provided with a sliding metallic striker, g, which, when it is drawn down, compresses a coil-spi ing, S, upon the rod 7, and when released is forced by the recoil of said spring against the bell, thus N indicates a short cord or chain secured to the striker, extending downward through a perforation in arm e, and provided on its pendent end with a right-angular hook, it. This hook is engaged with the hook c by drawing forcibly on the cord or chain N, thus compressing the spring S and setting the striker for sounding an alarm.
It being premised that the slats are closed when the shutter is shut, and the hooks being engaged with each other, any effort on the part of a burglar to open the slats will turn shaft H, disengage the hook c from the hook it, and allow the spring S to recoil, thus sounding an alarm by the forcible contact of the striker with the bell.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a slat-operator, its manipulating knob or handle, and an angular 8o hook on said knob or handle, of a bell upon the window-casing, a supported vertical rod extending upward under the said bell, a springactuated striker on said rod, and a cord or chain secured to said striker, and having an angular hook on its end adapted to engage the hook aforesaid, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
