Description
A! BIJUR. Shutters.
Patented Jan. 22,1878.
WITNESSES A UNITED STATES PATENTOFFIOE.
ASHER BIJUR, OF NEW YORK, N Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SH UTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 199,402, dated January 22, 1878; application filed December 4, 1877.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHER BIJUR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shutter, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved shutter, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on lineman, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same on line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has reference to such improvements in outside and inside shutters that the slats may be adjusted to any degree of inclination in easy manner, and retained in position therein without any slat-rod that is visible from the outside. The moving and retainin g mechanism is arranged at the inside of one stile of the shutter-frame, and is thereby protected against corrosion by the action of the weather, and is' also capable of being worked in a reliable manner.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shutter, of the usual construction for outside or inside use; and B, the slats, which swing by end studsor journals to in a perforated frame, 0, of the shutter-frame.
In place of hanging the slat-rod in the common manner-by staples and eyes at the center or other visible part of the slatsthe same is arranged in connection with the studs or journals a at one end of the slats, the shutter-stile at that side being recessed to receive the adjusting mechanism.
To the end of the slat studs or journals a are keyed short crank-arms b, which are parallel to each other, and connected by slat-rod D, that is pivoted in recesses of the arms b. The uppermost crank-arm b is extended back, and provided with a weight, 01, at the opposite end to balance the slat rod and arms, and facilitate thereby the adjustment of the slats in an easy manner, while also securing the retaining of the slats at whatever position they are adjusted.
The studs or journals of the slats turn in perforations of the inner frame 0, which is attached by screws 6 to the stiles, and readily taken out, if desired.
The slats and adjusting mechanism are applied to frame 0, and attached with the same to the shutter-frame, the adjusting mechan ism fitting into the recessed stile at one side of the same.
A suitable thumb-rest of one of the slats facilitates the setting of the same, though this may also be accomplished by taking hold of any one slat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with frame A, of slats B, swinging by end journals a in detachable frame 0, the ends of said journals being provided with short crank-arms b, connected by rod 1), and counterbalanced, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
ASHER BIJUR.
