Our invention relates too. simple device for applying conditioning or treating substances to the hair, and relates in particular'to a small and conveniently usable applicator whereby a solid compound comprising beneficial oils or'essences, or a grease, may be applied to the hair to supplement natural oils or to replace natural oils lost from the hair.

It is an object of the invention to provide an applicator comprising a compact container of fiat form, which may be easily handled and occupies small space, this container having a comb formed along one end thereof and an internal cavity'of fiat form, one edgeof which cavity communicates with the inner ends of the spaces between the teeth of the comb, there being inthe cavity a fiat cake or bar of the substance which is to be applied to the hair, and-means for-moving this cake so that an edge thereof will be moved into that edge portion of the cavity which communicates with the teeth interspaces, and therefore will be exposed at the inner ends of the teeth interspaces for contactwith the hair when the comb is passed through the hair in the ordinary manner of using a comb. n y

1 It is a further object of the inyentionto provide a comb-equipped and chambered applicator and a flat body or cake of one or more beneficial oleaginous substances,-this bo'dybeing characterized by having suflicient solidity and coherence to cause it to retain its form, but being of such constituency that it will readily adhere to the hair and will be readily fed to the hair through the chamber openingsprovided by the inner ends of the spaces between the comb teeth. v

A further object of the invention is to provide an applicator having a body of flat form with a comb formed along one of its edges and a fiat recess extendingin from one side of the body, an edge of this recess communicating with the teeth interspaces. For this recess a cover is provided which is held in place without the useof hinges and carries means operable from the exterior of the applicator to hold one edge of the body of applicable substance and to move the same into the inner ends of the teeth interspaces.

Further objects and advantages of the invention may be brought out in thefollow ing part of the specification, wherein specific description is for the purpose of presenting a full and com-; plete disclosure without limiting the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims; 7

As shown in Fig. 1, the applicator includes a body l0 having a comb ll formed along one end thereof, this comb consisting of teeth l2 separated by spaces I3 referred to herein as the comb teeth interspaces. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the body I0 has a rearwardly disposed side wall l4, two edge walls I5, and a bottom wall [6 cooperating with a, laterally directed wall portion I1 at the lower edge of the comb II to form a narrow recess l8.

As shown in Fig. 3, the recess I8 extends upwardly under the laterally directed wall portion I1 and into the lower ends of the comb teeth l2, so that this recess l8 communicates at its upper edge with the lower ends of the teeth interspaces l3. The lower wall l6 has along its front edge a lip 2|] which projects upwardly, and the laterally extending wall portion l1 has a shelf 2| projecting downwardly therefrom, the front face of this shelf 2| being offset inwardly from the plane defined by the external front face of the body H1. The edge walls l5 are likewise provided with shoulders 22 ofiset inwardly from the front face of the body l0.

' A rectangular door 23 is provided to close the opening defined by the front portion of the recess Hi. This door 23 has a downwardly directed and inwardly offset lip 24 on its lower edge to extend under the lip 20 which is formed on the bottom wall "5 of the body l0. When the door 23 is in closed position as shown in full lines in the drawings, the lateral and

25 and 26 thereof rest respectively against the shoulders 22 of the edge walls I5 and the shelf 2| of the wall portion H. The door 23 is of such size with relation to the opening of the body into which it fits that when it is moved from the opened position indicated by dotted lines 23 of Fig.3, into closing position, it closes with a snap action and is thereafter frictionally held in closed position, The wall portion I! has therein a thumbnail depression 30 and the upper edge 26 of the door 23has a lip 3| adapted to be engaged by the thumbnail whereby the door 23 may be pulled into opened position. 7 1

The door 23 has a vertical slot 32 in which a member 33 is slidable, this member 33 having on its outer end a knob 34 which lies close to the outer face of the door 23, and having connected to its inner end a holder 36 which extends laterally from one side to the other of the recess Hi. This holder 36 has therein an upwardly spaced channel 3'! to receive the lower edge of a thin rectangular 'bodyor cake 40 of the substance or composition which is to be applied to the hair by use of the comb II.

In Fig. 3 the holder 36 is shown in raised position so that the upper edge 4! of the thin body to will extend into the comb teeth interspaces l3 and will be, therefore, exposed-in the lowerends of the interspaces l3 for contact with the hair when it is combed by use oi, :the comb. H. The

upward movement of the body 40 in the recess I8, which constitutes a substantially closed'cavity showerthereafter oiten results inloss of oil from the. hair .so that it becomes stiff and tends to stand up or becomes .disarranged. The present applicator and its contained body :or cake of oleaginous characteristics is of small size so that 2 it may be readily carried, comparatively 11nbreakable. and may be quickly used at any time to, applya desired amount of material to the hair merely by running the comb H through the. hair while applying pressure to the knob 34 so as to move the upper edge of thebody 40 into the posi-. 'tion thereof as shown in Figs. 1 to, 3 inclusive.

A special, feature of the invention is the form.- ing of the oleaginous substance or substances, inclnding a small amount of perfume, into a flat body oi such hardness that it will retain its gen,- e'ral form, but at the sameftime will be sufficiently sof ttoenable its adherenceto the surfaces of the hair which passthroughtheinterspaces l 3. A further feature of the invention consists in making the inner ends oi the teeth 12 relatively thin where they are engaged by the edge of the cake 4!), as compared to the widthof the interspaces 13;. This may be accomplishedjby slenderizing the inner ends of the teeth l2 where they confront the edge portion of the cavity 13', or by making the teethlZ- slender throughout their entire length. As shown i n Fig. 2, the thickness of the teeth l-2- is approximately one-half the thickness of the adjacent interspaces [3. By use of this relation oft-he inner ends of-the teeth 12- and the interspaces I3, a ready flowing of the portions of the cake. 4&- which engage the inner ends 50 of" the teeth l2into' the interspaces i3 is accomplished by application of relatively small pressure against the knob 39. to force the cake lit in the cavity I8 toward the comb l t. 1. Means for applying oleaginous substancesto 4 the hair from a thin cake comprising oleaginous substance comprising: a thin hollow body having teeth along one edge thereof to form a comb, said body having a cavity therein to receive said cake, one edge portion of which communicates with the inner ends of the spaces between said teeth; and means adapted to move said cake in said cavity so that an edge thereof will be in said edge pprtion'io'f-said cayitygarrd theretore will be exposed for contact with hair which passes through the inner ends of said spaces between said -teeth.

A hair anointer for use with an oleaginous cake of the character described, comprising: a hollow body having a recess to receive said cake; a comb formed along an edge of said hollow body, the spaces between the teeth of the comb intersecting the edge portion of said cavity so that when the cake is moved within the cavity toward the comb an edge portion thereof will be exposed in the .inner ends of said spaces, the inner ends of the comb teeth having a thickness which is less than the width of the adjacent portions of the spaces between the teeth; and means for moving said cake in said cavity toward said comb, said last-named means including a part exposed externally of said body for manual engagement whereby pressure may be applied to force the cake into engagement with the inner ends of the comb teeth.

8. .A hair anointer for use with an oleaginous cake of the character described, comprising: a hollow body having a recess to receive said cake; a comb formed along an edge of said hollow body, the spaces between the teeth of the comb intersecting the edge portion of said cavity so that when the cake is moved within the cavity toward the comb an edge portion thereof will be exposed in the inner ends of said spaces, said hollow body being of thin form and having one wall thereof removable so as to provide access to said cavity, said wall having a slot therein; a cake holder in said cavity for receiving the edge of a cake opposite to said comb; and means extending through said slot for manual engagement whereby said holder may be moved so as to move said cake in said cavity.

A hair anointer for use with an oleaginous cake of the character described, comprising: a hollow body having a recess to receive said cake; a comb formed along an edge of said hollow body, the spaces between the teeth of the comb intersecting the edge portion of said cavity so that when the cake is moved within the cavity toward the comb an edge portion thereof will be exposed in the inner ends of said spaces; the

6 s inner ends of the comb teeth having a thickness which is less than the width of the adjacent portions of the spaces between the teeth, said hollow body being of thin form and having one wall thereof removable so as to provide access to said cavity, said wall having a slot therein; a cake holder in said cavity for receiving the edge of a cake opposite to said comb; and means extending through said slot for manual engagement whereby said holder may be moved so as to move said cake in said cavity.

10. Means for applying oleaginous substance from a cake thereof to the hair, comprising: a hollow body having teeth at one extremity thereof to form a comb, said body having a cavity therein with an opening at the inner ends of said teeth; a holder for said cake movable in said cavity toward said opening; and means adapted to move said holder in said cavity so as to move said cake toward said opening and expose a portion of said cake at the inner ends of said teeth for contact with hair which moves through said teeth.

11. Means for applying oleaginous substance from a cake thereof to the hair, comprising: a hollow body having teeth at one extremity thereof to form a comb, said body having a cavity therein with an opening at the inner ends of said teeth; a holder for said cake movable in said cavity toward said opening; and operating means having a part engageable on the exterior of said hollow body and a part extending in said cavity to engage said holder, said operating means being adapted to move said holder in said cavity so as to move said cake toward said opening and expose a portion of said cake at the inner ends of said teeth for contact with hair which moves through said teeth.
