This invention relates 'to a swab which is par .ticularly useful fordying'hair.

One object of thisfinventionis to provideea v swab holder in which the swab; part may-readily '5'bereplaced. I

Another object of this inventioncconcerns th control of the widthorthickness of -=the swab,

so as to allow the dyeing-of particularsections of strands of hairs.

Another object of this invention provides for retention of the dye in' suitable 'retainingmeans of the holder, from where it" maybe fed tothe "swab, commensurate to "the degree in which it is applied by the latter.

Other objects of this invention, which also concern the handiness and simplicity of construction'of this device, will be mre-clearly understood from the* accompanying drawing in which:

The device of Figsel and 2 shows a 'frame ll and a cover |2; the frame' l comprises, first,

a handle part I3, which ispointed at its-rear end -|4; it therefore permits the picking up of a strand of hair which is to be dyed;

secondly, the. swab holder part-|5, whiclfisoffset 40 vertically in respect to the 'h0lder'part' in other words the swab holdereiztends beyond the fingers or the'hand w-hich' holds-the handle so that the fingers holding the device-"are removed from the working plane.

The swab extends to such a distance 60 from the holder, that its narrow lower edge maybe observed by-thehairdresser while the hair or'rootthereofis being dyed. At the same timeit is'clcse enough to the toothed ends of-the "holder partand cover that it'is transversely "held'and restrained thereby and that it -may drawfrom the reserve ,dye contained between *the'teeth, while tthe dye contained in the'brush is-beingused' up'by application to the hair.

While the .device ofiFigs; l and 2 allow anad- .justment. of the. pressure exerted on theswabiby means of the holder part and'the cover,.itjmay be desirable to .avoid protruding.parts'like 'the nuts |9,which may interfere with free use and observation, and the hair may be caught thereon.

Devices. modified in this respect areshown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, and Figs. 6 and 7, respectively; these "figures show the partsl'll, |2, |3, |4, |5, "I"! and I8, like Figs. 1 and 2; the studs 6,and nuts I!) are replaced in this instance by studs'20 with heads 2|. These studs protrude fromlhubs which are of substantially the same diameter .as -heads 2| and which partly extendinto the correspondingly sized openings in the swab II. "The heads2l are spaced at such a distance from the. holderpart |5,,.that the .swab issuitably compressed between said holder part v.and the cover I2 when said. cover is-engagedv in,.abutmentunderneath the heads 2|. A depression :26 is, provided in the .cover,;|2 by' means of which thecover may beengagedayby .thenail of the finger, so that it canbe conveniently pulled up from the position of-1Fig.- 4 into that'tof Fig. 5.

The 'slotss23 may of course :behorizontally disposed in the cover |2 instead of :being Jdisposed therein vertically, in which .latter -instance the locking :motion itakes place' horizontally.

A transverse locking motion also looks the de- 'vice of Figs.-6 and-'7.

The modification of these two figures does not comprise any studs, but there is an undercut recess 21 in the frame between the handle portion and holder part thereof, into which a 60 laterally protruding tongue 28 of cover l2 may be inserted, the swab I! being compressed between the cover and the holder part when the former is thus inserted in the frame. From the cover, 12 extendsa key. 29, which fits into a suitable recess in the handle part above the recess 21, and which serves to guide the cover horizontally.

At the same time, when the tongue 28. is inserted in recess 21, the cover is pressed so hard down onto the swab H, that a hook 3| extending from the other end of the cover engages underneath the holder part I5. In this manner I also show a tongue 32, which matches a recess in the back side of the holder part, and which corresponds tongue 29.

. The swab shows suitable openings in the two modifications, by means of. which it is held in a correct position over the studs. The pins 33, indicated in Figs. 6 and 7,.serve the same purpose. The device is assembled by placing the swab in the correct position on the holder part, the studs and pins holding it in such a correct position whereupon the cover is clamped onto in respect to its function to the'holder part in the manner shown in one or the other modifications of the drawing.

While I have shown and described my invention with some degree of particularity, it will be realized that other modifications and changes may be resorted to under special conditions.

-I therefore do not wish to be limited andrestrictedto the exact details shown and described, but reserve the right to make such changes and modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the subject matter now being claimed.

What I claim is:-

1. A dyeing device for hair and beards comprising in combination, a pointed handle, a clamp integral with but longitudinally oifset from said handle, a detachable clamp parallel with the integral clamp, a swab intermediate said clamps to retain and extrude pigment, and means to lock and release said swab relative to said clamps.

3. A dyeing device for hair and beards comprising in combination, a pointed handle to facilitate the picking up of an individual hair,

.a, toothed clamp integral with but offset in a substantially longitudinal plane with said handle, a recessed frame integral with the handle,

adetachable toothed clamp one end of which registers with the recessed. portion of the frame,

a hook formed on the opposite end of said detachable clamp to engage the back of said integral clamp, a swab to retain and extrude pigment engaged intermediate said clamps, and means to lock and release said detachable clamp and swab relative to the integral clamp.

4. A dyeing device for hair and. beards comprising in combination, a pointed handle to? facilitate the picking up of an individual hair,

a toothed clamp integral with but offset in a substantially longitudinal plane with said handle, a recessed frame integral with the handle, a detachable toothed clamp one end of which registers with the recessed portion of the frame, a hook formed on the opposite end of said detachable clamp to engage the back of said integral clamp, a swab toretain and extrude pigment engaged intermediate said clamps, means to lock and release said detachable clamp and swab relative to the integral clamp, and means detachable clamp.

5. A dyeing device for hair and beards comprising in combination, a handle, a clamp integral and disposed in one plane with but longitudinally offset in said plane from said handle, a detachable clamp parallel with said integral clamp, a swab intermediate and protruding from .said clamps, and means to lock and release said swab relative to said clamps.

6. A dyeing device for hair and beards comprising in combination, a pointed handle, a

yclamp integral with but longitudinally offset from the handle, a detachable clamp, a hydroscopic swab intermediate and protruding from said clamps, said swab serving'as a means to retain and extrude pigments, and means to lock and release said swab and detachable clamp relative to the integral clamp.

'7.'In a hair dyeing device, a pair of coacting clamp plates, teeth comprised in said plates along corresponding sides thereof, and a swab engaged between said plates, an edge of said swab predeterminedly protruding from the points of saidteethin a straight unbroken line.
