COMBINED COMB AND BRUSH Filed March 14, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented July 27, 1948 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE COMBINED COMB ANlD BRUSH James Hermans, New York, NY.
Application March 14, 1945, Serial Not 582,727
My invention relatestoimprovements in combined brushes and combs, and the same has for its object to provide an eflicient and reliable device which is simple in construction and convenient in use;
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device in which the comb is normally housed within the outlines of the brush, and when the comb is extended or partly withdrawn from the brush the latter serves as a handle portion for the comb.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the brush back includes two members or parts movable relative to one another and when subjected to pressure holds or clamps the comb therebetween when the comb is extended for use.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the brush back is separated or split for the greater part of its major dimension in order to render the free or separated ends thereof resilient to permit of the same being pressed together to clamp the comb therebetween when extended or partly withdrawn.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device of the character specified in which the brush back may be made in two conforming parts secured together at one end, and
having the other end terminating in two portions or members uniformly separated throughout the length thereof to form a relatively narrow slit extending vertically entirely through the brush back, and provided upon the opposing faces thereof with longitudinal channels to receive the cooperating ribs on the comb to duly guide the comb in its movements relative to the brush back.
Other objects will, in part, be obvious and, part, be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one form of combined brush and comb constructed according to, and embodying my said invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the comb in extended or withdrawn position;
Fig. 3 is a, detail perspective view showing the interfitting ends of the back members in separated relation, and the means for holding said parts against displacement;
1 Claim. (Cl. 13286) Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one part or member of the brush back showingthe channel means in one face or wall of the comb recess;
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, on a somewhat enlarged scale;
Fig. 6 is a transverse view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, on a somewhat enlarged scale;
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the forward end of the comb;
Fig. 8 is an illustrative view showing one manner of using the device;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the invention, illustrating the adaptability of the invention to reduced dimensions of the brush and comb parts.
In said drawings, l0 designates the combined brush and comb, as a whole, I! the brush member, and I2 the comb member of the combination. The brush may be of any desired contour or outline, but in the present embodiment is shown as a military brush, and composed to a back I3 having a relatively narrow longitudinal opening or slot M which extends vertically entirely through the back l3, and serves to divide the same into two conforming halves or parts l3a, [3b. The back may be formed as an integral structure, as shown at Fig. 1, or in two separate parts secured rigidly together at one end l5 by a bolt or screw it. When the back is formed in two parts as illustrated at Figs. 2 to 8, inclusive, one end I3a of one of said parts is provided with a longitudinal recess ll to receive the registering rib l8 on the conforming end of the member or part I32) in order to prevent any displacement or rotary movement of said parts about the bolt or screw [6.
The opposing faces or walls of the longitudinal recess M are provided with channels I9 in which work the longitudinal ribs 20 provided along the opposite sides of the comb back I2. One of the ribs 2|) is provided with a shallow longitudinal groove 2! to receive the end of a short pin 22 extending from the forward end of the channel portion [9 to serve as a stop to limit the outward or extending movement of the comb relative to the brush back. The outer or forward end of comb is provided with a small knob or finger portion '23 to facilitate the partial withdrawal of the comb l2 from the brush back preparatory to using the same.
It is to be noted that by providing the brush back with the longitudinal recess l4 which is closed at one end only, the other or forward ends of the brush parts or members l3a, [3b, are free and in separated relation which construction imparts a suificient amount of elasticity or resilien cy to the back to permit of said ends being subjected to pressure between the thumb and remaining fingers, as illustrated at Fig. 8, and thus insure the firm clampin of the comb l2 therebetween in extended position for use.
Use of the brush member of the variant forms of the invention is had by grasping the back of the brush in the usual manner, and either with the comb member retracted within the confines of the brush member or extended with respect to the bristles of the brush.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 9 illustrates the adaptability of the invention to reduced dimensions of the brush and the comb parts, and in particular, reduced transverse dimension of the brush. Thus the brush members I30 and ltd conform generally to the brush members set of ends and otherwise completely spaced apart as jaws defining a longitudinal open slideway for the reception of a comb; a pin extending transversely through said interlocked ends for securing said two parts together; a comb having its back fitted into said slideway for guided sliding movement therealong; and a limit-stop arrangement defining the maximum extent of withdrawal of said comb from the brush, the length of said end-interlocking of said two parts being so minor relative to the length of said slideway that grasping of the said brush back during a hair brushing or a hair combing operation clamps the said comb in place by reason of the pressure onsaid jaws.
