COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Application filed August 17, 1920. Serial No. 404,135.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES MURRAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tuguegarao, in the province of Cagayan, Philippine Islands, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in combs and has for an object the provision of a fountain comb adapted to contain a. liquid such as a tonic, dye or the like for treating the hair.
Another object is the provision of a comb having a liquid reservoir and liquid distributing tubes communicating therewith, together with manually operated means for regulating the flow of liquid to the tubes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings liigure 1 is a view in side elevation of a comb constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as comprising a comb having a. back 10, coarse teeth 11 and fine teeth 12.
The back 10 of the comb is hollow and provides a reservoir 13 which is adapted to contain suitable liquid for hair treatment, while the teeth 11 are formed with a. central bore 14 which opens at one side of the teeth at a point spaced from their ends as shown at 15. It is preferred that only the teeth 11 be so formed and these teeth thus provide distributing tubes which communicate with the reservoir 13 for the purpose of distributing the contents of the said reservoir through the hair when the comb is in use.
In order to cut off the supply of liquid to the distributing tubes or teeth, the reservoir is provided with a partition 16 having perforations 17 therein. These perforations are normally closed by a valve in the form of a plate 18 which is yieldingly held in position to close the opening 17 by means of a spring 19. It is preferred to employ two or more of these plates so that the distribution of the contents of the reservoir may be regulated owing to the number of teeth or tubes provided. Thus, only the teeth which are passing through the hair will be used to ponvey the liquid from the reservoir to the For the purpose of operating the plates 18, there is provided an operating member or rod 20 which is secured to the plate and extends upward to av sleeve QI-located in the reservoir and projects beyond the upper edge of the comb back as shown. By this construction the liquid is normally held within the reservoir 13 but a downward pressure upon the operating member or rod 20 will release the liquid from the reservoir and permit its passage to the hollow teeth or tubes, the downward movement of the plate acting to force the liquid through the teeth or tubes. The reservoir is provided with a filling opening 22 which is normally closed by a threaded plug 23.
In the use of the invention, the cross teeth of the comb are drawn through the hair in the usual manner and the liquid released and passed through the distributing tubes or teeth into the hair. If desired, the teeth 12 may be used in the usual manner to further aid in the distribution of the liquid by combing. The usual method of treatment is to rub the liquid into the hair with the tips of the fingers, but this is a more or less disagreeable and difficult task, while with the use of the present invention, a better result may be accomplished in less time and with less labor.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. 7
Having described the invention what is claimed is i A comb having av hollow back to provide a reservoir, hollow teeth communicating with said reservoir and defining distributing tubes, a perforated partition located within the reservoir and a plunger operating within the reservoir to coverthe perforations and to force the contents of the reservoir through the tubes.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
CHARLES MURRAY.
