UNITED STATES PATENT Farce...
OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 246,674, dated September 6, 1881.
Application filed May 17, 1881.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN HEYNEMANN, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Overalls; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of overalls and other garments for outside wear; and it consists in strengthening or re enforcing and padding the knees, so as to make them more easy for the wearer in certain kinds of work, as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my invention. is a section View.
In many kinds of work, and more especially in mining in low tunnels and drifts, it is necessary for the workman to kneel upon the rocks or floor of the drift while using the pick and other tools, and this position, besides wearing the clothes rapidly at the knees, soon causes great pain and discomfort to the wearer.
My invention is intended to obviate this (lifficulty and protect the knees.
It consists in forming the knees B of the overalls A with a re-enforce of the same or of any other suitable or desirable material, which may be stitched on inside the main body of the overalls at the knees, and a quantity of cotton batting, wadding, or other soft material is introduced between the two thicknesses of material, and is then stitched or quilted firmly Fig. 2
(No model.)
into place, so that in kneeling the wearer will 5 always have asoftcushion to protect the knees. This re-enforce or cushion may be secured upon the outside as well as upon the inside, or upon both sides, if desired.
In some cases it may be found desirable to stitch a water-proof re-enforce upon the outside of the knees; but this will probably be found too expensive for the ordinary kinds of goods, and I therefore prefer to stitch the re-enforce upon the inside, as before described.
I am aware that a. secondary piece of cloth has been secured to the knees of pants to prevent the bagging ot' the main cloth at that point, occasioned by their use by persons of sedentary habits, and such I. do not claim, as such construction could not effect the purposes of my invention; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, overalls having the cloth on the inside, at the knees, provided with a secondary piece of cloth, between which and the body fabric, is secured a padding of waddin g or other suitable material, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HERMANN HEYNEMANN.
Witnesses:
