UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. PHELPS, OF WEST NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOULDER AND BACK BRACING SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,655, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed July 11, 1881. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. PHELPS, of West Newton, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shoulder and Back Bracing Suspenders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification.
This invention has for its object the construction for gentlemens wear of shoulder and back bracing suspenders, the shoulder-supporting straps being adjustably connected at each end with the back pieces to thus insure a more perfect fit of the said straps to the shoulders, and a more effective support.
The d rawingrepresen ts, in perspective, a rear elevation of a shoulder and back bracing suspender embodying my invention.
The back pieces, a b, shaped to rest upon the back and extend from the upper portion of the shoulder-blades down to or below the hips, constitute the foundation with which are connected the shoulder-straps and other parts. The back pieces are connected with strong elastic webbing at c d c, and provided with buckles 2 3, with which are adjustably secured the ends 4 5 of the padded shoulder-strapsj, the buckles 2 enabling the shoulder-straps to be adjusted up or down to place the padded portion in the desired position at the front of the shoulder, which cannot be readily done when the ends 4 are sewed to the back pieces as usual. Each shoulder-strap has a third end piece, 6, of webbing, upon which is placed a buckle, g, or slide, having a block-and-pulley contrivance, h, which receives a cord, 2', bent at its ends to form button-holes 7 S to engage the usual buttons at the front of the waistband of trowsers, the said button-hole loops being held in place by means of metal bands 10 of usual construction.
The short strap 0?, at the back of the pieces a 1), serves to support the strap 1, provided with buckle m, having a loose pulley-block, n, which receives a cord, 0, bent and secured to form button-holes 12 13 to engage troWsers-buttons at the rear of the usual waistband.
The back pieces, a 1), near their lower ends,
have connected with them the strapsp g, which engage and hold the pad 1', the said straps and pad constituting an abdominal supporter or waist-belt, as may be desired.
1 do not broadly claim the back pieces and shoulder-braces irrespective of the construction of the latter and their method of attachment with the said back pieces.
The back pieces, a Z), will be suitably stiffened by means of any usual stili'ening strips or material.
I claim 1. The shoulder and back supporting suspenders, composed of the back pieces, a I), the shoulder-strapsadjustably connected therewith at each end, and provided with ends (5, buckles, and supports, and end pieces, '5, provided with button-holes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The back pieces, a I), the shoulder-pieces, with their ends ndjustably connected therewith, and provided with ends (5, buckles, supports, and cords i, lllLH ided with button-holes, combined with the strap I, secured at the back of the back pieoes, and the cord 0, provided wit h button-holes 1; 13, all as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The back pieces, a b, the shoulder-pieces, with their ends at 5 adj list-ably connected therewith, and provided with ends 6, buckles, supports, and cord 1 provided with button-holes, combined with the strap 1, secured at the back of the back pieces, the cord 0, provided with button-holes l2 l3, and with the supporterp q 'r, all substantially as described.
4. The connected back pieces and their shoulder-straps, provided with ends, and end pieces containing button-holes, combined with an end piece containing button-holes and supported at the back of the said back pieces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification iii the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. PHELPS.
