1 Claim.
My invention relates to an improvement in an andiron and its novelty Consists in the adaptation and combination of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
The burning of substantial sized logs in an open fire-place is still one of the most attractive features of a modern home. But the andirons now in use do not support substantial sized logs without falling over and also do not safely protect them against rolling out or up against the back wall.
My improved andirons for the first time solve all of these problems which have gone unsolved for hundreds of years and furnish a complete support for the heaviest logs insuring a front and back control that prevents rolling out and rolling back against the back wall and so secures a perfect draft and safe burning.
Furthermore, my andirons so completely support the entire length of the logs that the last remnants of the logs remain in place on the andirons until they are fully consumed thereby insuring safe, perfect and complete combustion.
The drawing is a perspective of my complete device with logs and fire-place shown in the dotted outline.
Referring to the drawing, of which are adapted to shown in the drawings.
Each of said pair of steel or cast metal andirons I are composed of a U-shaped body member 2 which is open at its rear and which is supported by front legs 3 which are welded thereto and by rear legs 4 which are welded to the open ends of 2 at the rear. Each of said legs 4 have a backturned projection 5 terminating the upper end of said legs 4. A front guard or stop 6 is welded to each of said members 2 in the middle of the U and a connector 1 is welded to the front of the middle of the U member 2 and each has a hole 8 therein at its outer end.
These two complete units I are adapted to be used together in an open fire-place II as shown in dotted outline and the backturned projections 5 will contact the back wall 9 of the fire-place I I so that the andirons I will be held a definite distance from the back wall 9 and this is shown in the spacin of the lower ends of legs 4 from the lower edge I0 of the back wall 9,
Logs I2 of substantial size and weight are placed across the pair of andirons I and are held in place against rolling back or forward by the stop 6 and the upper parts of legs 4.
I is an andiron a pair be used together as 946, Serial No. 646,644
The pair of andirons I each have four legs so that they do not roll over or become displaced as heavy logs are placed thereon, and because of the complete support furnished by the four support elements of the two U-shaped body members 2, the logs I2 will burn down thereon to the last without fal ing away therefrom.
The projections 5 insure the logs I2 always being well spaced from the back wall 9 0f the fireplace II as clearly shown in the distance of the legs 4 from the lower edge ll] of the back wall 9 thereby insuring a perfect draft around the back of the logs I2 at all times.
The connectors I on the front end of the andirons I have holes 8 so that decorative front standards of usual constructio can be readily secured to said andirons I as desired by means of similar connectors that are regular equipment on said standards and by the use of bolts and nuts mounted through said holes 8 and through similar holes in alignment therewith on the connectors of said decorative front standards.
In some small fire-places it will only be necessary to use a single andiron I and in such a case only short heavy logs I2 can be used.
It will be apparent that many variations may be made in the structure as described and claimed herein without departing from the spirit and intent of the same and all such variations are comprehended within the scope of the claim.
I claim:
In an andiron, the combination of a U-shaped body with the open end at the rear, two front legs supporting the front end, tWo rear legs each mounted at the open ends of said body and each extending above said body and terminatin at their upper ends in a back turned spacing projection, and a log guard projecting above said body at the middle of the front.
