A heat economizing device adapted to be fitted to an open fireplace, comprises a plurality of elongated strip-like reflectors, preferably polished on both sides, and means for fixing them one above the other to extend across the upper portion of the fireplace above the fret or grate bars in such a position that at least part of the radiant heat from the back of the fire which would normally strike the ceiling is intercepted and deflected into a generally forward direction. The device shown in Fig. 1 comprises a side member 1 at each side of the front of the fireplace frame 2 held in position by a rod located at each of its ends in an aperture 7 at the top of each member 1. The rod is screwthreaded at one end, a nut on this screw-thread being used to hold the members 1 in position by squeezing them against the frame. The reflector strips, preferably made from a light alloy and each made up of a broad and narrow strip 10, 11, span the distance between members 1 being pivotally attached thereto by brackets 8. If the strips are made flexible, such that they may be flexed and sprung into position in the brackets, thereby serving to exert clamping pressure, the rod may be dispensed with. In Fig. 3 the strips 10, 11 engage in slots 14 in side reflector panels 15, which are dished to stand proud of the side cheeks and seat on firebricks 16. A baffle 17, either secured to the strip or the panels 15, is provided to extend behind the top strip. This top strip may be arranged to close the top of the frame or, alternatively, a separate sealing strip may extend between the edges 18 of the panels. The baffle 17 may be replaced by the baffle 19, Fig. 4, the flanged ends 20 of which seat against the fireback behind panels 15 or bricks 16 with this cut-away portion 21 lowermost.
