D. P. L'AUGH'LIN,
, SNAP 300K.- 7 No. 244,627. Patented July 19,1881.
WITNESSZES IN EZV'TOR %gd B gflttarney 1 w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID F. LAUGHLIN, OF CLYDE, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO CHARLES E. DOOLITTLE AN JOHN MANNING, BOTHOF SAME PLACE.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,627, dated July 19, 71881. Application filed April 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be'it known that I, DAVID F. LAUGHLIN, of Clyde, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference '10 being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a front view of 1 5 the same and Fig. 3 is a similar view, representing a modified construction of the hook.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention contemplates an improved construction of snap-hooks for the use in harness and similar purposes, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
I make my improved hook from a single piece of wire by first bending it into a double loop, A, and then turning the ends down at right angles to and at opposite sides of the loop, as shown at B, forming a flattened hook, C, at each end of the wire. The hooks C are turned in opposite directions and cross one an- 0 other, as shown in the drawings, and have their ends 0 0 turned inwardly, so as to form an eye, D, with a V-shaped opening, d, leading into it. I prefer to construct the hook in this manner when it is to be used for checkreins, halters, and breast-straps, changing only 3 5 the size of the hook, according to the purpose for which it is to be used.' When used for lariats I prefer to modify the construction, as shown in Fig. 3, in which the spring-loop Ais in a plane with the hooked end of the snap, 40 and provided with a swivel-ring, E. The operation is, of course, the same in both cases.
This hook is strong, eflicient, and can be manufactured at a small expense. It is easily operated, and can be made of any required size and finish.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patents of the United States- A The snap-hook composed of a single piece of 0 wire bent to form the double spring-loop A, arms B B, and hooks C C, forming the eye D with the V=shaped inlet d, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID F. LAUGHLIN.
