g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. GOEMAN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BILL-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,350, dated May 10, 1881..
Application filed March 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, JOHN E. GoRMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Newenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to paper-files adapted to hold papers and resist the constant pressure due to the contained papers by an automatic frictional lock or clutch; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and'specificallypointed out in the claims.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section; Fig. 2, a perspective view taken from the rear, showing the follower inclined; and
Fig. 3, a detail view in cross-section, showing follower and base in binding position.
Referring to the drawings, inwhich similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A represents the base, B the end or front, and O the sides, of the file, the latter havinglongitudinal grooves 0 upon the inner surface, which terminate in inverted-V-shaped recesses D.
E represents the follower, having transverse oscillating base 0, which base e operatesjin the The follower E is inclined in one direction in such a manner-thatthe upper forward edge is in an approximately vertical plane with the forward edge of the base 6, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The follower and base are formed in one piece,an d the pressure upon the follower holds the diagonal corners of the base in locked position by its friction upon the upper and lower surfaces of the grooves c.
The action of the base 0 in the inverted-V- shaped recesses D allows the follower to be inclined backward. as is obvious. The recesses D may be semicircular in shape, if desired.
00 represents a convenient handle.
As described, theinvention is applied to files when the papers are placed vertically; but it is apparent that the papers may lie flat, and a similar follower operate in vertical grooves.
Various modifications may be made in details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention. The essential and important features are shown and described.
What 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letv ters Patent, is-
1. In a paper-file, the vertical sides provided with grooves c, the follower E, inclined as described, and having the base 6, the ends of which are adapted to slide in said grooves and to bind at diagonal corners, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a paper-file constructed as described, the vertical sides provided with the grooves c and inverted-V-shaped recesses D, in combination with a follower, inclined as described, and provided with base 6, adapted to slide in said grooves and to assume an inclined position in said recesses, as and for the purposes as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. GORMAN.
