7 Claims. (01. 122 -126) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a fire tube boiler.
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a fire tube boiler characterized by a boiler casing for holding and circulating a quantity of water and having a combustion chamber located in the bottom portion of the casing attached to which a burner is mounted to supply the required heat to heat the water circulating in the boiler casing. Still further it is proposed to provide a combustion chamber with a downwardly sloping top crown sheet over the top of which the circulating water is adapted to pass and which is sloped downwards so that the circulating water may easily wash sludge deposits off the top face of the crown sheet.
A further object of the invention proposes the provision of fire tubes spaced from each other and extending upwards from the crown sheet to the top of the casing through the circulating water providing additional surface to transmit heat of the burner to the water, heating the same.
Still another object of the invention proposes extending the top ends of the fire tubes through the top wall of the boiler casing and over which a smoke hood is mounted and connected with a chimney for the purpose of-conveying smoke from the burner to the chimney.
It is still another object of this invention to provide superimposed baflle plates within the boiler casing one of which has finger portions extending between the fire tubes for the purpose of assisting in circulating the water in the combustion chamber.
Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of a cover sheet of rigid metal engaged upon the crown sheet of the combustion chamber with the provision of a means for moving the cover sheet to strike against the bottommost baflle plate increasing the angular inclination of this cover sheet and causing it to be slightly vibrated to assist the water in washing the sludge deposits from the top face of this cover sheet.
It is another object of this invention to construct a fire tube boiler which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects-and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims'in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. 7

Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a fire tube boiler, constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but being partially vertically sectioned to reveal interior construction.

Fig. 6 is a partial enlarged vertical sectional view similar to a portion of Fig. 4, but illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. '7 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 11 of Fig. 6.
The fire tube boiler, according to this invention, includes a boiler casing l0 constructed of metal for holding and circulating a quantity of water I l. The back of the casing in is provided with an inlet pipe l2 for the water to be heated and a discharge pipe l3 for withdrawing steam from the boiler casing II].
A hollow combustion chamber I4 is mounted within the bottom portion of the boiler casing Ill and is provided with a downwardly sloping top crown sheet 15. This top crown sheet l5 slopes downwards in order that the water circulating through the water casing may wash sludge deposits from the top of this combustion chamber I4.
A plate I6 is secured in position in the front wall of the boiler casing l0 and is provided with an opening aligned with a complementary opening in an adjacent wall of the combustion chamber M with a tube I! located between the openings and in which any of the conventional oil burners (not shown on the drawing) is adapted to be mounted. Further details of the burner will not be given in this specification as these details form no part of this invention. The purpose of the burner is to supply the required heat for heating the water H.
The burner may be connected to any source of oil or gas.
A plurality of rectangular fire tubes l8 extend upwards from the crown sheet I 5 of the combustion chamber M to the top wall of the casing l0. A smoke hood I9 is mounted on the top wall of the boiler casing over the top ends of the fire tubes l8. This smoke hood I9 is adapted to be connected with a chimney outlet and is designed to convey smoke from the combustion chamber l 4 to the chimney. 'In addition heat passing through the fire tubes 18 will be transmitted through the walls into the water H circulating in the casing ID to assist in heating this water. A narrow baille plate 20 is mounted in the boiler casing ID at a position slightly above the high end of the crown sheet 15. A second wider baflle 2| is mounted within the casing l over the baffle plate 20. This latter baffle plate 2| has rearwardly extending fingers which project between the adjacent faces of the firetubes 18,. The baiiie plates 20, and 21 are provided forcausing the water i l to circulate in the casing 10 in a path from the high end to the low end of the crown sheet l to cause a definite washing action across the downwardly sloping face of this crown sheet which will wash' all sludge deposits off the crown sheet.
In the modified form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 6 and '7 a means is provided for assist.-
in the water in removing the sludge deposits from the downwardly sloping crown sheet [5 of the combustion chamber M. In this form of the invention a cover sheet :30 is extended along and is secured above the crown sheet l5. Th'e bottom end of the cover sheet .30 is attached to a rod 3| extended across the boiler casing l0. One end of the rod 3! is rotatively extended through a packing gland 32 mounted on the side wall of the asing II) and is provided with a downwardly extending finger portion 33 by which the rod 3! may be gripped to be turned. This will cause the cover sheet 30 to be pivoted into a raised position illustrated by the dot and dash lines 30', in Fig. '7 to strike upon the bottom face of the narrow baflie plate 20. Striking the cover sheet 30 against this baffle plate will cause it to jar loose any sludge deposits which have acccumulated on the top face of the cover sheet thus permitting the water to freely wash them down the inclined surface and off the cover sheet 30.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of :the several views.
While I have illustrated and described the pref ferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be under-stood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scopeof the invention as dc.- fined in the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

A fire tube boiler, comprising a boiler ,casing for holding and circulating a quantity of wa- .ter and for generating steam, a combustion chamber located in the bottom portion of said casing having a burner and a downwardly slope ing top crown sheet, rectangular fire tubes spaced from each other, located at desired positions, and extending upwards from said crown sheet to the top of said casing, a smoke hood mounted on the top of said casing for connecting said fire .tubes with a chimney, a narrow bafile plate mounted within said casing slightly above th hi h end of said crown sheet, and a wider baille plate amount? led within said casing above said narrow baffle plate.
2. A fire tube boiler, comprising a boiler casing for holding and circulating a quantity of Waterand generating steam, a combustion chain,
,b.er located in the bottom portion Of said casing having a burner and a downwardl sloping ;top crown sheet, rectangular fire tubes spaced gro n crown sheet to the top of said casing, a smoke hood mounted on the top of said casin for connecting said fire tubes with a chimney, a narrow baflle plate mounted within casing slightly above the high end of said crown sheet, and a wider baffle plate mounted within said casing above said narrow baflle plate, said fire tubes being adapted to transfer heat passing therethrough into the Water to assist in heating the same, and being so arranged as, to permit a very narrow body of water therebetween, surrounded by a] comparatively large heating surface of the boiler tubes.
3. A fire tube boiler, comprising a boiler casing for holding and circulating a quantity of water and generating steam, a combustion chamber located in the bottom portion of said casing having a burner and a downwardly sloping top crown sheet, rectangular fire tubes spaced from each other and extending upwards from said crown sheet t the top of said casing, a smoke hood mounted on the top of said casing for connecting said fire tubes with a chimney, a, narrow a e pl t ounted w hin said casing slightly above the high end of said crown sheet, and a wider baf l plate mounted Within said as n above said narrow baflle plate, said fire tubes being adapted to transfer heat passing there.- through into the water to assist in heating the same, and a water inlet and a steam outlet.
4. A fire tube boiler, comprising a boiler casing for holding and circulating a quantity of water and generating steam, a combustion chamber located in the bottom portion of said casing have ing a burner and a downwardly sloping top crown sheet, rectangular fire tubes spaced from each other and extending upwards from said crown sheet to the top of said casing, a, smoke hood mounted on the top of said casing for connecting said fire tubes with a chimney, a narrow baflle plate mounted within said casing slightly above the high end of said crown sheet, and a wider baille plate mounted within said casing above said narrow ba-iffle plate, said fire tubes being adapted to transfer heat passing therethrough into the water to assist in heating the same and a Water inlet and a steam outlet, said baffle plates being extended rearwards from the front wall of said boiler casing.

A fire tube boiler, comprising a boiler casing for holding and circulating a quantity of water and generating steam, a combustion chamber 10- seated in th bottom portion o sa c g ing a burner and a downwardly sloping top crown sheet,.rectangular fire tubes spaced from each other and extending upwards from said crown ,sheet to the top of said casing, a smoke hood mounted on the top Oi said casing for connecting aid fire t bes with a chimney, a narrow baflle Plate mounted within said casing slightly above the high end of said crown sheet, and a wider baffle plate mounted within said casing above said narrow bafiie plate, said fire tubes being adapted to transfer heat passing therethrough into the water to assist in heating the same, a water inlet and a steam outlet, said vbaiile plates being extended rearwards from the front wall of said boiler casing, said latter baffle plate being formed of rearwardly extending finger portions which extend between adjacent faces of said fire tubes.
6. A fire tube boiler, comprising a'boiler casing for holding and circulating a quantity of water and generating steam, a combustion chamber located :in the bottom portion of said casing and havin a burner and a downwardl sloping top each other and extending upwards f-rom said T15 crown sheet, rectangular fire .tubes spaced from each other and extending upwards from said crown sheet to the top of said casing, a smoke hood mounted on the top of said casing for connecting said fire tubes with a chimney, a narrow baffle plate mounted within said casing slightly above the high end of said crown sheet, and a Wider baffle plate mounted within said casing above said narrow baflle plate, said fire tubes being adapted to transfer heat passing therethrough into the water to assist in heating the same, a water inlet and a steam outlet, said baflle plates being extended rearwards from the front wall of said boiler casing, said latter baflle plate being formed of rearwardly extending finger portions which extend between adjacent faces of said fire tubes, a cover sheet of rigid metal hinged upon said crown sheet, and means to cause said cover sheet to strike against said narrow baffle plate.
7. A fire tube boiler, comprising a boiler casing Ior holding and circulating a quantity of water and generating steam, a combustion chamber 10- cated in the bottom portion of said casing for a burner and having a downwardly sloping top crown sheet, rectangular fire tubes spaced from each other and extending upwards from said crown sheet to the top of said casing, a smoke hood mounted on the top of said casing for connecting said fire tubes with a chimney, a narrow baflle plate mounted Within said casing slightly above the high end of said crown sheet, and a wider baflle plate mounted within said casing above said narrow baflie plate, a cover sheet of rigid metal hinged upon said crown sheet, means for causing said cover sheet to strike against said narrow bafiie plate, said means comprising a rod positioned adjacent the low end of said cover sheet, said cover sheet being fixedly attached to said rod, and said rod being extended at one end to the exterior of said casing through a packing gland, and means for gripping said end to turn said rod.
