Heating by indirect contact of hot waste gases. -The dust hopper C or furnace throat of a refuse destructor or the like forming the combustion chamber of a waste heat water-tube boiler has a tube screen G connected at one end with the front lower or mud drum F, and at the other by means of downcomers I with the front upper or steam drum E of the boiler. The hopper C is the first of a number which is dependent upon the size of the boiler. The tubes G may be spaced closely together and being located near to the point of admission of the flame are preferably steeply inclined. The drum E may be extended beyond the furnace walls and the downcomers I built in the side walls or insulated in casings.
