Screw Driver.
No. 236,692. Patented Jan. 18. 18 81 MEIR/9,86,? I fiiwnfw:
N PETERS. PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. (:V
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO SAMUEL B. PEAKMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SCREW-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 236,692, dated January 18, 1881,
Application filed August 23, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. PEAKMAN, of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screw-Drivers, of which the following is a specification. v
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the screw-d river and the handle for the same bentin the desired shape out of one piece or rod of steel oriron.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a front view of my improved screwdriver. Fig. II is a section at line 00, Fig. I.
I take a bar of steel of the required strength, and flatten one end, I), to form the required shape for a screw-driver. The bar is then bent around to form a convenient handle for the tool, as shown at a a a. The end a is slightly flattened and pointed at one side to lie against the side of the bar, and it is then fastened to the same.
The manner of fastening the end 0 to the side of the bar a may be done in various ways. The same may be soldered or riveted to the bar, or the end 0 may be tapered and twisted spirally around the bar a. I prefer for that purpose a ferrule, n, the opening at the lower end of which is only of such a size as to allow the rod a to pass, while at its upper end the said opening or cavity is sufficiently large to insert the flattened and pointed end 0 as well as the rod a. This ferrule is placed upon the rod a after the end b has received the desired shape of a screw-driver. The rod a is then bent into the desired shape to form the handle, and its end 0 flattened and pointed, when, after said end 0 is laid close against the side of the rod a, this ferrule n is moved upward and passed partly over this end 0, so as to confine the same.
I am aware that it is not new to form acorkscrew from asingle piece of metal, and I make no claim thereto.
What I do claim is- In combination with bar a, having beveled end 0 folded against it to form a handle for the screw-driver, the tapering ferrule a, binding said end 0 against the body of said bar, substantially as set forth.
