A the NITED STATES PATENT FFICEO CHARLES F. SPENCER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY S. BALLOU, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 236,190, dated January 4, 1881. Application filed March 6, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPENCER, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and Stateof New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of the lamp. Fig.
2 is a similar view, but looking at right angles to Fig. 1.
My improvement relates to what is known as combined stand and bracket lamps.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the standard of the lamp, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the drawings, A represents the base. B is the lamp-body, and O is the standard which forms the subject of my invention. This standard is made in the form of a double bow or loop, having two side projections, a a, lying in the same plane, opposite each other, and forming handles. The projection of these parts is such as to throw the shade or globe clear of the wall when the lamp is attached to the wall as a bracket-lamp. The lampbody rests in a depression or bend in the top of the standard, and may be secured in place 0 by a screw or otherwise. The bottoms of the arms forming the standard are. attached rigidly to the base.
The standard may be made separate from base and attached thereto, or it may be 3 5 cast or otherwise formed solid with the base.
In each of the handles a. a is formed a vertical slot, 1), through which may be inserted the head of the hook c, for attaching the lamp to the wall, as shown in Fig. 1.
By the means above described handles are 40 formed at the side of the lamp, by which the lamp is conveniently grasped and carried, and these handles serve the additional purpose of attachments for hanging the lamp upon the wall. By this means, also, the ordinary 5 straight standard is avoided, which standard requires extra attachments to extend the hearing to the wall, and by this means a good deal of expense is avoided.
A single handle of the kind above described might be made effective but by the use of two it can be grasped from either side and hungeither side out.
The concavity in the top of the standard is such as to embrace the cylinder forming the lamp-body and give it afirm seat.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, springs or straps forming the standard; nor do I claim, broadly, slots in the standard; but
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a lamp, the standard consisting of acontinuous strap forming a handle on each side, provided with slots for hanging on a hook or stud on a wall, and having a concavity in the top for receiving the cylindrical lamp, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
R. F. Oscoon, J AOOB SPAHN.
