UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT FERGUSON, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN SPORTSMENS LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,486, dated June 4, 1878; application filed May 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT FERGUSON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sportmens Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical section of a lantern to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through the line to m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the parts of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved attachment for lanterns, to enable them to be secured in a firm and substantial manner to the hat of the sportsman, so that it will not restrict his movements, and shall throw the light directly forward upon the game, leaving the sportsman in the shade.
The invention consists in the combination of the plate provided with the groove-flanges and the catch, and the sliding plate provided with a latch, the curved plate, and the straps with each other, and with the case of a lantern, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the case of a lantern, which is provided with a lamp, B, a reflector, O, alens, D, and a door or blind, E, in the usual way. To the rear side of the case A is secured a plate, F, the edges of which, or narrow strips attached to said edges, are bent over to form grooves f to receive the edges of the plate Gr. To the upper part of the plate F is attached a projection or catch, f, to receive the springlatch 9, attached to the upper part of the slidin g plate G, to hold the said plate in place.
To the lower part of the sliding plate G is attached a curved plate, H, to the ends of the arms of which are attached the ends of two straps, I. The straps I are made of such a length that they may be buckled around the hat of a sportsman, and thus secure the said lantern in place.
To the upper part of the plate G, or to a keeper attached to said plate, is buckled a strap, J, which is designed to pass over the top of the sportsmans hat, and has a loop in its rear end to receive the straps I, and thus secure the lantern more firmly in place upon the sportsmans hat.
With this construction the lantern will be held firmly and securely, so that it will not be liable to be displaced by the movements of the sportsman in walking or running, and at the same time shall be so held as to always throw the light directly forward and upon the game, While leaving the sportsman himself in shadow.
When the lantern is designed to be used upon a boat, the curved plate H and the straps I I J are omitted, and a tube, K, is. secured to the sliding plate G, which tube is designed to receive the end of a stake or pole attached to the bow of the boat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the plate F, provided with the groove-flanges f and the catch f and the sliding plate G, provided-With the latch g, the curved plate H, and the straps I I J with each other, and with the case A of a lantern, substantially as herein shown and described.
ALBERT FERGUSON. Witnesses:
JAMES T. GRAHAM, O. SEDGWIOK.
