Description

S. M. FURMAN. Hitohing-Post.
No. 224,083. Patented Feb. 3, 1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. FURMAN, OF HENDERSON, KENTUCKY.
HITCHlNc-Pos'r.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.`224,083, dated February 3, 1880. l
i' Application filed July 1, 187%?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. FURMAM of Henderson, in the countyr oi' Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hitching Posts, of which the following is a specitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in wliich- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved hitching-post closed or lowered. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, illustrating its use, and part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail crosssectiou of the upper part of the outer case or box, taken on the line .r x of Fig..1.
Theobject ol" this invention is to furnish an improved bitching-post, which shall be so constructed that it maybe lowered into the ground when not required for use, so as to be ont of the way, which may be readily arranged for use, and which shall be simple in construction a-nd inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention consists of a hitching -post formed ofthe hollow post provided with across-pin in its lower part, and the inclosing box or case provided with the notched and rabbeted iiange upon the inner surface of its upper part; and in the combination of the hollow post provided with a crosspinin its lower part, the inclosing box or case provided with the notched and rabbeted flange, and the chain provided with a snap-hook at its outer end and a weighti :at its inner end, with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the post, which is made hollow or tubular, and is placed within `the case or box B. .A The middle or lower part of the hollowpost A is provided with a cross -pin, c', the ends of which project, as'shownAin nig. 1.
Upon the inner surface ot' the case B, near its upper end7 is formed a iiange, b', which is notched or grooved transversely, as showniu Fig. 3, to allow the projecting ends of the pin a.' to `pass it as the post A is raised and lowered. Theparts of the flange b are rabbeted upon the upper side to form seats for the ends of the pin a. The rabbets do not extend quite to the notches orgrooves in the flange b', so that the horse, by working the post A, cannot bring the ends of the pin a into the said notches, and thus cause the said post to drop downinto the case B.
The lower end of the post A has a crosspin, ferrule, cap, or other stop, a3, att-ached to `out of the case B.
To the upper end of the post A is attached a cap, a2, which has a hole formed through its middle part for the passage of the chain C. The chain C has a snap-hook, c', attached to its upper end to be sprung into the bit-ring of the head-stall, and has a light weight, c2, attached to its lower end, sufcient to keep the chain always taut, and to act as a stop to prevent the chain C from being drawn out of the cavity of the post A.
The upper end of the case B is provided with a hinged cap, D, to shut down over the post A and cover and protect it.
The cap D and the upper end of the case B may be provided with perforated lugs to receive a pin, a padlock, or` other fastening device.
The chain G 'and its attachments may be omitted, if desired, and the upper end of the `post A provided with a loop, knob, or other device to receive the hitch-strap ot' the harness; but I prefer to use the chain as being more convenientand as makin g'the post more complete.
All the various parts of the device are designed to be made of galvanized iron to prevent corrosion.
In using the device the box or case B is designed to be sunk into the ground or pavement to, or nearly to, its upper end, so as to be out of the way when the post A is lowered and the cap D closed.
In conclusion, I re'er to Patents Nos. 32,601, 69,0L7, 127,085, and 209,288 as showing the present state of the art; and I disclaim any-` thing therein described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentff- The combination7 in a hitchingpost, of the hollow post A, provided with a cross-pin, a', in its lower part, the inclosing box or case B, provided with the notched and rabbeted iiange b', and the chain O, provided with a snap-hook, c',at its outer end, and a weight, c2, at its inner end, all substantially as herein shown and described.
SAMUEL M. FURMAN.
