J; H. YOUNG.
Whip-Sockets. N0. 139,989 PatentgdJune17J873- 4 AM PHDTO-LITHOGR/IPHIO ca Mx (oasmusfs macsss) UNITED STATES PATENT ()rrron JAMES H. YOUNG, OF NEWBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT l'N WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,989, dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. YOUNG, of Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new Improved WVhip-Socket, of which the following is specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my improved whip-socket on the line 0 c. Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line a: a, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish for wagons of all kinds animproved whip-socket, which firmly grasps the whip therein, so that the loss of whips and other annoyances arising therefrom may be prevented.
In the drawing, A represents the socket, of the usual shape and material, through which are passed, at convenient distance from each other, from the outside toward theinside, the bunches B of strong bristles, which are firmly applied and connected to the socket A. These bunches may be arranged in circular planes between the top and bottom of the socket, with a greater number of bunches placed, preferably, near the top, than at the lower part of the socket; the bunches may also be arranged spirally or in any other manner in socket A, provided only that a strong and intimate hold on the Whip is produced. The bunches B extend radially from the circumference toward the center of the socket, leaving a suitable space in the center. The whip end enters easily therein and is tightly embraced by the bristles, which spread and offer sufficient resistance against the disconnection of the whip from the socket till taken out by the driver.
The effectiveness and durability of such a socket is not impaired, even if used a considerable length of time, and will need no repairing or changing of the parts.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent-- The whip'socket A, having bristlesB extending inward and arranged to hold the whip in place, substantially as and for the purpose described. 7
JAS. H. YOUNG.
