H. O. THOMAS.
WIRE GATE.
No. 325,219. Patented Aug. 25, 1885.
UNHED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WIRE GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,219, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed July 26, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY ORRIS TrroMAs, of Fremont, Dodge county, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Wire Gate for Farms and for General Use with ire Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for stretching and holding the wires of an ordinary wire gate in place, the object being to provide devices of this character which shall be simple in their construction, strong and durable, and readily and easily applied.
' With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improvements applied to an ordinary wire fence, whereby a section of the same may serve as a gate. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the position occupied by the parts when being locked. Fig. 3 is a section on the line .1? mof Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the post A, link B, and bar E; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the link employed at the bottom of the fence-post to engage the lower end of the gate.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents a fence-post, and b wires secured at their ends thereto.
A represents a post to which are secured staples I), through which the wires 0 extend to a bar, E, which, when the gate is locked, is adjacent to post A. The wires are connected midway between post A and bar E by means of a bar, A which holds them in their proper relative positions. The bar E is pro vided at its lower end, on the inner side thereof, with a notch, and hinged to the lower end of post A by staples or other suitable fastenin gs is a link, D, which is bent to form shoulders f, which prevent said link from dropping below a horizontal position.
At the upper end of the bar E is hinged a link, B, which fits over bar E and post A. The link B is provided with an eye or loop, g, through which passes a staple, h, which is secured to alever, O, the upper end of which lever extends a slight distance beyond its point of connection with link B. A recess or seat, z', is made on the side of post A adjacent to the lever C, at the upper end of said post.
lVhen it is desired to open the gate, the lever O is lifted to remove the link B from the post A, and when this has been accomplished the bar E may be removed from link D and the gate opened. To close the gate, the bar E is engaged with link D, and the lever 0 fit ted in the recess in the upper end of the post- A, and the lower end of lever G pushed toward the post A, which draws the link B over post- A and locks the gate.
Iain aware of German Patent No. 8,310, and do not seek to claim anything therein shown. My invention differs from the construction shown in said patent in the means for connecting bar E and post A by the link B and lever G.
I claim The gate and latch post A, having a recess in its upper end, in combination with the link D, hinged to the post A at its lower end, the bar E, having a notch at its lower end to receive the link D, alink B, hinged to the upper end of bar E, and the lever 0, working in the recess at the upper end of the post A, as set forth.
HENRY ORB IS THOMAS.
Witnesses B. F. FRENCH, J. A. VAN Acorns.
