Description

E. GOUGH.
L a m p No. 229,117. Patented June 22,1880.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWABI) GOUGH, OF ALLEN'IOWN, PENNSYLVANIA,
L A M P SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,117, dated June 22, 1880.
v Application filed January 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it ,known that I, EDWARD GOUGH, of
I the city of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer- 5 tain new and useful Improvements in Lamps;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the IO same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail 15 view of the neck and cover.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to lamps; and it consists in certain improvements in the construc- 20 tion of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the can or body of my improved lamp,
25 which is formed wholly of cast metal, and provided with a neck, B, having laterally-projecting studs G. The cover D, which is also In operation, the cover is adjusted upon the neck of the can and turned so as to cause the studs 0 to enter groove Ii, thus holding the cover securely in position.
The can, being made of cast metal exclusively, is strong, durable, and inexpensive.
I am aware that lamps have heretofore been made of cast metal, as in the case of 1 Hammer, No. 100,398, March 1, 1870, where the cast-metal body is provided with studs for the attachment of a separate handle. This I do not claim.
I. am not aware that a cast-metal lamp having a neck provided with lateral studs has been ever combined with a cast-metal top or cover having an interior annular groove and notches for attachment to the body of the can.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in lamps, the combination, with a cast-metal body or can, A, having neck B, provided with studs 0, of the castmetal cover D, having notches E E and interior an'nular groove F, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD eouen.
Witnesses HENRY '1. KLEOKNER, THEODORE NAGEL.
